Mary Ann McPhetres (daughter of Moses W McPhetres and Anna Page)1910, 1911 was born May 30, 18191912, 1913, and died date unknown. She married Edwin Bradbury on Abt. 18391914, son of Thomas Bradbury and Sally Webster.

Includes NotesNotes for Mary Ann McPhetres:
These notes substantiate that Mary Ann McPhetres was (1) the daughter of Ann McPhetres Burbank, (2) mother of John T Bradbury, and (3) wife of Edwin Bradbury. These notes need to be read along with the notes under Edwin Bradbury.

1. Obtained from Old Town Maine Vital Records: "First Town Record Book, 1806-1827" Page 14:

"Children of Moses & Ann McPhetres:
Mary Ann McPhetres, b. 30 May 1819
Sanford J. McPhetres, b. 11 Jan 1822"

2. From Old Town, ME Marriage Intentions/Marriages - Book B: 1827-1839 page 60 It says:

"Burbank, Abner G. & Mrs. Anna McPhetres i(ntentions) 20 Sep 1829 (p. 205).

This indicates Ann was married to a McPhetres before since she is referred to as "Mrs.".

3. 1840, 1850, and 1860 Census tie together:

1840 Census Burbank Family (with McPheters)

Sex Age Comments/Hypothesis

Male 30-40 Abner Burbank born 1800 in a month following the month the census was taken, making him 39

Female 40-50 Ann(ie) McPheters Burbank born 1800 in a month prior to the month the census was taken making her 40.

Male 15-20 Sanford J McPheters born Jan 1822

Female 15-20 Mary Ann McPheters aka Mrs. Edwin Bradbury. Mary Ann McPheters was born 30 May 1819. She was the older sister of Sanford b 1822 and Moses b 1829. Her age at John T Bradbury's birth in 1840 was 20. There is a 15-20 year old female listed in the 1840 census living in the Thomas Bradbury household also. I suspect that this was one in the same person. It is possible the Bradbury and Burbank/McPheters families had not yet resolved the long term living arrangements of the new young mother. As it turns out, the child under 5 (John T Bradbury) living with the Thomas Bradbury family and listed in the 1840 census, does end up living with this family in the 1850 census.

Male 10-15 Moses W McPheters born Feb 1829. This is also consistent with 1850 census and tombstone. Moses W McPheters was born February 1829.

1850 Census Burbank/McPheters Family

Name Age Sex Comments/Hypothesis

Abner G Burbank 49 M Census notes say "Farmer - Born in New Hampshire" Abner was probably born late in 1800

A. Burbank 50 F Ann was probably born early in 1800. Age is consistent with 1840 census.

Note: Sanford married Sarah Gillman in 1848 so would not have been living in this household in 1850

Note: Mary Ann McPheters is not listed with this family in 1850 but her alleged son John T Bradbury (by marriage or child out of wedlock to Edwin Bradbury) is being brought up in this household in 1850 (see below)

W. McPheters 21 M Age is consistent with 1840 census. Probably used the name W. McPheters since his father's name was Moses. This person was born 1828-1829. Moses W McPheters died November 26, 1852 apparently unmarried, therefore he was probably still living at home in 1850 at age of 21.

John T Bradbury 10 M 1850 Census note says "Attended School". He was born Jan 1840. This is the son of Edwin Bradbury and his wife McPhetres per death certificate of John T Bradbury. At 10 he was living in the "Burbank/McPheters" household. Abner Burbank's wife's (Ann or Annie or Anna), first married name was McPheters, according to the records above and since all other people buried with Abner and Annie Burbank carry the name McPheters (6 others not counting an infant) it appears that Ann (McPheters) Burbank listed above, was his maternal grandmother. This suggests Jon T's mother must have died between 1840-1850.

1860 Census Burbank/McPheters Family

John T is 19, still living with Abner G Burbank and Ann. The ages are consistent (within a year) of both the 1840 and 1850 census. The census indicates Mrs. McPheters/Burbank's first name was Ann and her tombstone uses her nickname Annie.

4. This was Ann's second marriage (since her marriage intentions to Abner her name was listed as MRS Anna McPhetres) . Ann McPheters Burbank was 50 in the 1850 census (Abner was only 49). Annie's tombstone says she died Nov 22, 1876 AE 78 years, so she must have been born about 1799 (+/- 1 year). This puts her about two generations older than John T Bradbury, and in the "grandmother" generation for John T. Bradbury.

5. Also living with the Burbank's in 1850, according to the census, was W. McPheters, a male 21 years of age. His full name was Moses W. McPheters. He was therefore born about 1829. This makes him a possible son of Annie. Since he used the name W. McPheters he was probably named after his father of the same full name - Moses W. McPheters. This W. McPheters is the same Moses W McPheters buried in Snows Cemetery per Tombstone Photos and MOCA records : "Died Nov 26, 1852 AE 23 years 9 months". Calculating backwards he would be born about Feb 26, 1829 and 21 at the time of the 1850 census. This is the son of Ann McPheters Burbank and the brother of Mary Ann McPheters - wife of Edwin Bradbury. He is buried closest to Annie in the Burbank/McPheters plot in Snows Cemetery.

6. The burial "hierarchy" at Snows Cemetery seems to be by generation in a single line from right to left (oldest to youngest). The rightmost people (between the two access roads) are Abner Burbank and a stone immediately below his, his wife Annie (both facing upward). All the rest of the people buried here are McPheters. To her (and his) left is Moses W. McPheters (one generation younger but since none of the other carry the Burbank name and they are related to Annie. Also since they are not children of Annie and Abner (since they carry the McPheters name), they are her children by a prior marriage - to Moses McPhetres. Continuing to the left of Moses is Sanford J McPheters. Sanford and Moses are in the same generation (YOBs 1821 and 1829) and are apparently brothers (This is consistent with the 1840 census). To Sanford's left is a stone with only the death date (July 16, 1866). I conclude this is Sanford's wife, Sarah Gilman (since two of the other stones in this line say "Daughters of Sanford and Sarah McPheters". To Sarah's left is another broken stone with the last part of the first name ending in 'ah'. Sanford and Sarah probably named a daughter Sarah. The stone says she was the wife of Thomas Murphy. This Sarah would be the third generation buried there. Immediately in front of Sarah's broken stone is a stone (face up) that indicates the death of an infant. It says "Died AE 1 year 6 months 27 days". This is probably the infant child of Sarah McPheters and Thomas Murphy. To the left of Sarah McPheters Murphy's stone is the stone for Roxanna, "Daughter of Sanford J and Sarah McPheters" (another 3rd generation). To Roxanna's left (the last, leftmost stone) is the stone for Eunice Anna McPheters (another) "Daughter of Sanford J and Sarah McPheters". The progression from right to left does imply a pecking order of generations and age (oldest to youngest). Based upon this and other related information herein, I have constructed a family tree which reflects this.

7. Since there were no Burbank children in the 1850 Census, or buried in Snows Cemetery, this lends credence to the fact this was a second marriage for Annie, since she apparently had all her children by her first marriage to a Moses McPheters.

8. Since John T. Bradbury was brought up in the Burbank household and there were other McPheters living there (1850 census - W. McPheters), and since his mother's name was McPheters (death certificate), this further leads one to believe that his mother was related to W. McPheters (as her brother), and to Annie (McPheters) Burbank (as her mother). Furthermore, town records document that Sanford J McPheters was also her brother. This is consistent with the 1840 census.

9. Therefore, it seems safe to conclude that John T Bradbury was living with his maternal grandmother Ann(ie) McPheters Burbank and her second husband Abner Burbank in 1850, and that John T Bradbury's parents (Edwin Bradbury and Mary Ann McPheters) had left and/or died. Both of John T Bradbury's paternal grandparents (Thomas Bradbury and Sally Webster) had died between 1840-1850.

Note: Look for Mary Ann McPhetres Bradbury burial (d. 1840-1850) with or near her father Moses (who probably died c. 1829 in Orono)

1800 Moses McPheters, Ann ?, and Abner Burbank born
1810 each about 10 years old living with parents

1820 Ann and Moses McPheters (both about 20) married living in Orono (p. 35 1820 census) with one daughter in Orono or Old Town - Mary Ann McPheters - <=1 year old

1830 Abner Burbank (aged 30) in Orono?(p. 478 1830 census) and married to Ann McPheters (1829) aged 30. Should have three children (Mary Ann McPheters) aged 10-11, Sanford J McPheters aged 8, and Moses W aged 1

1840 Abner Burbank (now 40) moved to Hermon with Ann (aged 40), Mary Ann aged 20, Sanford aged 18, and Moses W aged 11. This is consistent with 1840 census noted above.
