MILITARY RECORD: MASSACHUSETTS ARCHIVES Revolutionary War: 17 Mar 1777 to 31 Dec 1779: Capt. Barnes' Co. 1 Jan 1780 to 17 Mar 1780: Capt. Dow's Co. served a three years enlistment in the army in Rhode Island 9 Jul 1780: joined Capt. Pritchard's Co., a six months man from the town of Marlborough; served until 13 Jan 1781 Massachusetts continental line, Private, received pension described as nineteen on the rolls of 1780 (CHECK:one source indicated he was at Valley Forge under George Washington)
LAND: 1783 Dec: original land grant to Samuel Gates He settled in Lunenberg, VT and built first a log cabin on a hundred acres of land, fifty of which had been granted to him and fifty of which he bought for $25.
CENSUS: 1790: Vermont census, Lunengurgh Town: Samuel and family (7 members in all) 3 m under 26; 1 m 26 to 45; 2 f under 26; 1 f 25 to 45 1840: Vermont census, Essex County, Samuel is 79 and living with a Simon C. Gates
NOTES: 1784: grant to Samuel Gates; 21 pounds 1791 Jan 6: delegate from Lunenburg to Vermont state convention to consider ratification of the Constitution of the United States, held at Bennington. An election was held in each town to elect one delegate. 1792: Samuel built the first frame house in town, about a half mile east of the present (1980s) village on a hill along what is now U.S.Route 2. This became the center of town as it was used as a tavern for the traveler, a church on the Sabbath, and a place where meetings were held, including that of the first Essex County Court. 1800: juror on the first sitting of the Essex County Court Samuel probably held more inportant town offices for longer periods than any other man of his day. FAMILY LETTERS: 4 Apr 1853 letter from Eliza Webb to William C. Gates: Samuel is very well, will walk a mile very quick 29 July 1888 from John Wingate Webb to M.E.G. Wilson: "There is not today living in the town of Lunenburgh a Gates, a Clark, or a Webb where there used to be large families of each and I have the vanity to believe that as a race,with a few exceptions, they were a credit to any town." (He was living in Maidstone, VT, a few miles north of Lunenburgh)
