Meagher Family Name

The Irish surname Meagher, also found as Maher, is itself an anglicization of the Gaelic sept name O Meachair, from "mirchair" meaning "kindly, hospitable". This important sept, which is kin to the O Carrolls of Ely, had its homeland in the barony on Ikerrin (in Irish Crich-ui-Cairin) in County Tipperary. Unlike many other septs at the time of the Anglo-Norman Invasion of the twelfth century, the O Meachair were not driven from their land, and the name continues to be most numerous in this region, over fifty percent of all people of the name in Ireland continue to be born in Tipperary.

The territory of O Meachair was near the town of Roscrea, at the foot of the Devil's Bit Mountain. Once an extremely powerful sept, it was celebrated by the sixteenth century Gaelic poet O'Heerin in the following lines:

"Powerfully have hey peoples their land,
The O Meaghers of the land of Ui Carin,
The bride who dwell at Bearnan Eli,
It is right to extol their fame."

And among the bearers of such fame have been Captain John Meagher, one of the most adventurous and ill-starred rapparees of the seventeenth century, who was hanged in 1690, and Thomas Francis Meagher (1823-1867), known as "Meagher of the Sword" and one of the most prominent of the Young Irelanders. He was later leader of the Irish Brigade in the Federal Army in the American Civil War. The surname was indeed established in the new world at least as long ago as 1804, in April of which year two passengers on the ship "Jane", bound for New York out of Dunlin, were "Thomas and Mary Mahir, from Callan in Kilkenny."

Blazon of Arms: Azure two lions rampant combatant or, supporting a sword in pale proper in base two crescents argent.

Crest: On a mount vert. A hawk rising belled and hooded proper, on each wing a crescent or.

Motto: In periculis audax.

Translation: Bold in dangers.
