Al served the US Navy 26 January 1943 to 13 April 1946. He served on the Monongahela. The Mongngahela participated in Consolidation of Southern Solomons, Hollandia Operation, Turk, Satawan, Ponape Raid, Marianas Operaation, Assaults on the Phillippine Islands, Leyte Operation, Luzon Operation, Iwo Jima Operation, and Okinawa Gunto Operation.
