James Atterberry pruchased from Ben Stoddert of the Dist. of Columbia, 285 acres, 14 March 1808 (Hardin CO. KY. Deeds)

From Joseph W. Atterbury, Jr, Great Great Grandson of James:
"My great, great grandfather, James Atterbury (Grandfather Jimmie) was either a son or a grandson of the Atterbury who came to America from England. James Atterbury was born in 1758. He lived in South Carolina near Camden during the Revolutionary War and served during that war under Gen. Francis Marion."

"He was present and partook of the noted potato supper in the swamps of SC which consisted solely of sweet potatoes. This potato supper was given considerable notoriety by the British Officer prisoner held by the Americans, who said that a people who could thus subsist and fight were unconquerable."

"Atterbury rode two different horses during that war, one named Red Buck and the other Queen Anne. After the war, he moved to Grayson CO. KY, and in about 1820, moved to Missouri, and settled in Monroe County, Missouri. His wife, Dorcas Wilkerson, came from England.
He died in Monroe CO. MO in 1843, and was buried in the Willis Atterbury family grave yard on the farm 4 miles North of Madison, MO."

"I have never been able to learn the name of the father of grandfather Jimmie Atterbury, but he had SEVEN SONS as follows: Michael; John; Thomas; Charles;, Edward "Neddie"; James (my grandfather Jimmie); and William.
(This from a statement given to me (Joseph W. Atterbury, Jr)) by old Aunt Mary Ash, a member of our family who died here in 1905 at the age of 100 years.")
(Paris Loucks added Richard and Nathan)

From John C. Atterbury of St. Louis, MO. November 1959:
"I am past 69 and retired, and my father, Joseph W. Atterbury, Sr., a Confederate Veteran, has told me many times about James Atterbury and the names of the two horses he rode during the Revolutionary War. Red Buck was shot from under him:

Family information concerning James Atterbury and descendants was supplied by the following family members to Judge James Hardin Atterbury, son of Abram Davis Atterbury. Abram was born 1827, Grayson CO. KY. and his father was Michael Attebury, born 17 Oct 1793.

His father's children were: Nancy, Dorcas, William, James, Jr., Daniel, Ashford, Greenbury, and John.

From Joseph W. Atterbury, Jr: James Atterbury ahd the following children: James, Nancy (Porter), William, Daniel, Dorcas, Greenbury, Ashford, and John.

Notes by Lois Earline (Thomas) Branch, Dec 1999:
Much of the Atterberry research material I have is from notes by Paris Loucks, Mary Ash, and Lillian Harmon. If not for these old timers, this family would have remained a mystery for years to come. Lillian spent many, many hours transcribing courthouse records by hand and though her material has been used by other Atterberry researchers, she has never been given the credit she deserves. Though it is many years too late, I have to say "THANK YOU, LILLIAN"
All of her material and that of other researchers will be sent to the Portland Genealogical Forum.
I have spent many years going over all the old timers material and adding to it by courthouse records, family members input, and census records.

Notes for D
ORCAS MCKINSAR WILKERSON:
Some records say Dorcas was born in England, some say South Carolina.

She may have been a widow as one record shows her as Dorcas Wilkerson and another says McKinsar.
She had a son named Wilkerson. That shows that her maiden name was most likely Wilkerson.
