Notes for J
OHN ATTERBERRY:
"Edwards Brothers Illustrated Atlas of Randolph CO. MO" dated 1876, page 43, shows the plat of John's farm: Township 53N, Range 15 W, having 80 acres in NW Quarter and 80 acres in the SW Quarter, a total of 160 acres. "
His neighbors were Rev. Sam C. Davis; J. H. Dagby; C. Smith and W.W. Burton.

From notes of Lillian Harmon, 1960: "Mary Brennan, my cousin (twice removed) in Huntsville, took me to the John Atterbury farm, then owned by a man named Hall, and he drove my car out into a nearby meadow where there was a small cedar grove, and we saw and I took pictures of the tombstones, of Theodocia Burton (It's as clear as could be, no moss, nothing to dim the writing on the tombstone which is shown on the picture page of Theodocia Burton and the stone. I have sent a writeup on the location of this family cemetery and the tombstones of Theodocia, her daughter Theodocia C. metcalf; sister Drucilla Shreckise; and small son, Alva F. just over 3 years of age, to the Historical Society at Columbia, Missouri."

John Atterbury was deeded his land 11 May 1837 by David Herring. He in turn deeded his farm to his son-in-law, Thomas F. Metcalf on 8 Nov 1879 in Randolph County, Missouri.

Following is a letter written by John Atterbury to his son, Angus William Atterbury:
Mt. Airy, MO.
July 18th 1876

My Dear Son:

We are all well with the exception of Polk's little girl that is troubled with the diarrhea. We received your letter that gave us the information in regard to your family.

Your Mother is at John McQuaid's and we have heard from her twice since she left and each time she sent word that her health was improving, once by letter and the last time by Lutie Harlan. My own health is improving. We have had a good deal of rain down here.

Jno. A. Pitts died very suddenly at the residence of his son, S.C. Pitts in Huntsville on the 25th June.

I think we will not make over half crop at our house. The Metcalf men ive one half of this out to put him in the stack. I am very glad to hear of fine prospects with your crop. I will be glad to have yu visit me soon with your family.

The note of yours in favor of ___ Davis I have taken in and paid $120.50. I have never given you any satisfaction in regards to final disposition, now I want to make you a present of that note on the first occassion you visit me - come down soon. The real reason why I have not given you satisfaction heretofore was because I wanted to see how it would be taken by the rest of the family and also to cultivate a disposition that I see manifested in you to maintain an indpendent position in the world and relying on honesty and integrity to work your way through the world - and also to turn your hands so you may be better able to accomplish that end.

Give my best and kindest respects to your noble-headed wife who I hop and believe will be a good and true companion to you in attaining this great object.

That ___ Tobacco looks well but the corn and oats are not so good. We are all doing tolerable well.
You Father - in love
Jno. Atterbury

One of John's children moved to Colorado.
