1. ARTHUR1 COATS/COATES was born 1770 in Said to be born Ireland, and died March 23, 1826 in Athens CO. OH. He married MARY ANN MORRIS. She was born August 26, 1773 in Lambart, Chester CO. PA, and died 1848 in Athens CO. OH.

RTHUR COATS/COATES:
No one is sure which way to spell the name. Some spell it Coats, some spell it Coates and some of the southern families spell it Courts, but it is always pronounced Coats.
I have found both the spellings Coats and Coates in my own family, but in my genealogy will only use COATS....Lois E. Thomas 1999

March 25 1826, Obituary in ATHENS MIRROR newspaper shows death of Arthur Coates. "Died...in this vicinity, on the evening of the 23d inst. at an advanced age, Mr. Arthur Coates. The deceased was among the earliest settlers of this country."....Listed in Burial records First Presbyterian Church, Athens, OH

He is listed in the "History of Athens County Ohio" as an original member of the First Presbyterian Church of Athens". "In early times, and for many years after the organization of the county, the passage of the river was made by ferry boats...little scows which were poled and rowed across. In 1800 there was a ferry kept by old Arthur Coates (called Coates' Ferry) a few rods below where the south bridge now stands, and another one called Harpers ferry"...page 204
He was a ferryman. Owned his own ferry and died in debt because of it.

He was the brother of George Coates and possibly of John Coats.
He may also have been the brother or possibly the father of Thomas and Joseph Coats who settled within the prairie now forming the Mercer County, Ohio reservoir. (Mercer County Standard, April 1871)

Inventory of Arthur's estate was made 10 June 1826 to 2 May 1831 in Athens County, Ohio.

"The Administration of the estate of A. Coates late of the County of Athens, State to the Court of Common Pleas of said County that they cannot at this time state distinctly to the Court the precise situation of the accounts in relation to said estate but they have ascertained enough concerning them to be able to say beyond any doubt that the personal property of said estate will be insufficient to discharge the debts due from said estate, and they believe that it will fall short three hundred dollars or nearly that, the accounts of said intestate were kept in so loose and negligent a manner that with all the certain the administration have been able to make they have been unable to determine either the debts due to or from said estate, but they have to be able by the next term of this court ot state specifically the situation of the receipts and expenditures...

The Medical Profession - Dr. John Coates, born in Fayette County, PA., in 1791, came to Ohio with his parents in childhood, and he was educated at Athens College, founding there a cultured manhood that made him one of the most valued citizens of Ross County for many years. He made his home at Chillicothe after he began practice, and continued his residence there until his death in 1865, at the age of 75 years. Dr. John Coates, among doctors practicing at Chillicothe in 1818."....From Charles W. Rice, Santa Anna, CA, now deceased.
