OBIT:
Pioneer found dead at home... The body of Charles Coates who lived alone at his house on Richland Avenue was taken to the Newsome Walburn undertaking establishment where it was viewed by Coroner Kempton who pronounced the death due to heart failure. Life had been absent for seven or eight hours when the body was found, examining physicians said.
The deceased was the grandson of the first settler southwest of Athens in the territory that now embraces the Athens State hospital and Mechanicsburg. That first settler was Arthur Coates whose homestead was on the present site of the hospital pumping station and whose home was constantly being visited by Indians living in the nearby hills....(Athens CO. Obituary Book, page 56 1920-30)

3. JAMES MATAITO² COATS (ARTHUR¹ COATS/COATES) was born Bet. 1800 - 1804 in Washington CO. OH, and died Bet. 1870 - 1874 in Logan Co. IL.. He married MARY FIERCE November 15, 1827 in Athens Co. OH., daughter of JOHN FIERCE and CATHARINE MILLER. She was born November 1808 in VA, and died Aft. 1880 in Logan CO. IL.

Nov 21, 1865: James and Mary Coates sold 320 acres of land to John Welch. This was the west half of Section #35 in Twp. #11 of Range #15 in Athens, OH.
Witnessed by J.M. Welch and Charles W. Coates.
State of Ohio Tthens County, on this 20th day of Nov 1865, before me, J.M. Welch, a Notary Public in aforesaid County, personally came said James Coates and Mary Coates his wife and acknowledged the signing and sealing of the above instrument to be thus a free act and deed and said Mary being by me examined apart from thus said husband and the contents of said deed made known to her declared that she signed, sealed, and acknowledged the same voluntarily, and that she is still content therewith.
Given my hand and official seal. J.M. Welch Notary Pulic. The foregoing deed is stamped with a one Dollar US IR Stamp. Enlisted for record Dec 30th 1865, and Recorded January 1, 1866. (Copied from notes sent by Sandra Quinn)

James and his wife Mary left Ohio about 1868 along with other members of the Coats/Coates family and some of the Munyon family and traveled to Logan County, Illinois where the settled in Poordo, close to their children.
