Notes for A
UGUSTUS PHILLIPS:
[PHILLIPS FAMILY.FTW]

Augustus Phillips, listed as August Phillips in some records. Used the name Gus
He had black hair and black eyes. He stood over six ft. tall.
His son-in-law, Earl Logan Thomas, told of the time that they were building railroads in Illinois: During the men's breaks, instead of resting, they would wrestle, box, etc. and make wagers. One day one of the men bet Augustus five dollars that he wasn't strong enough to pick up a rail by himself. Now, you must remember that the rails in those days were a lot thinner than the ones used today, just the same it would be quite a feat for a man to pick one up by himself. Augustus leaned over, picked up the rail and carried it clear across camp, and then proudly collected his five dollars. It goes to show how big and strong he was, just like a bull.
Another story about Gus has been told to me many times by my father, Marion Estuace Thomas: "When I was about 7 years old my mother took me to see my Grandfather on his deathbed. It was the custom then for the family to gather and bid their farewells. My mother picked me up and set me on the bed next to my Grandpa, I looked at his big pocket watch lying on the table and asked him if I might have it when he died. My mother grabbed me and rushed me out of the room, scolding me for my rudeness, but Grandpa told her to bring me back..he thought it was funny. My mother later gave me the watch." (Now in possession of Lois Earline Thomas to be passed on to her son, Thomas Daniel Murray, who also asked his Grandpa if he could have it when he died.)
Augustus enlisted for Service in Civil War, February 1863 at Elkhart, Logan Co. IL.
Joined as a Private in the 64th Regiment, Company "H", Illinois Infantry.
Hester applied for Widow's Pension on 21 Sept. 1917. His pension #284202. Her witnesses were C.W. Coats and L.L. Denison, both of Lake Fork, IL.
