Notes for T
HOMAS -4 BROWNELL:
Will of Thomas Brownell dated 1730, proven 20 Jun 1732. Executors, wife Mary and son Thomas. "To wife half of dwelling house and half of orchard, for life, use of all bills and bonds, or forty pounds a year instead; all my Negroes and half of chattels, for life; and use of household goods; to son Thomas ten pounds at decease of wife, and confirmation of Deed of Gift formerly made, and like legacy to sons John George and Jeremiah; to son Charles, all farming tools, and use of outdoor stock; ten pounds and confirmation of deed, he bringing his mother fire-wood for life, etc; to granddaughter Mary Carr, one hundred pounds, 2 feather beds, trunk, etc., and at death of grandmother rest of household goods, but if said grand-dau die before 18, then 5 sons of testator to have."

From Article by Mrs. Brownell Bready

"After the end of King Phillip's war, in 1676, Little Compton, RI became an organized township, the records of whose meetings are still preserved. A preponderance of Massachusetts settlers brought into existence a Congregational Church, and the proprietors granted one thirty-secondth of the township to the exclusive use of the ministry, but Rhode Island influence was shown by the vote that a minister be called "provided that he be content with voluntary offerings and the product of his land, without a rate or tax upon the people", thus comparatively early separating Church from State. Soil was fertile, etc. and Little Compton was known as the land of stone walls built by Indians, and with windmills on every eminence. Among those attracted to Little Compton was Thos. Brownell of Portsmouth, 3rd son of Thomas Brownell, the immigrant. His wife, Mary Pearce, was the dau of Rich'd Pearce, of Portsmouth, who belonged to the 20th generation of the Percy family of Northumberland, England.

Thomas Brownell held no public office, but he gathered the largest fortune, 1000 pounds in bonds, of any of the sons of Thomas Brownell the immigrant."

Town Council's will states he is the fourth son, and he died in 1732, age 76 years.
