Notes for J
OHN LAURENS DEY:

John Laurens Duyts was the only child born to Hans Laurens and his second wife, Sarah Vincent Fountaine. John was born in 1687 while the family was living on Staten Island, New York.

Sometime during 1710, John married Anne Brown, there is nothing known about Anne's background. John and Anne became the parents of eight children who were John, born 1711, Ann, born 1715, William born 1718, James born in 1720, Vincent born in 1722, David born in 1725, Joseph born in 1728, and Catherine, born in 1730. The first six children were born in New York and the last two were born in Middlesex, New Jersey.

At some time during Johns lifetime, the spelling of the family name changed from Duyts to Dey. All the children born to John and Anne used the spelling Dey.

In 1715, John served with the Richmond County Militia, Richmond County, Staten Island, New York. In 1725, John moved his family to cranberry, Middlesex County, new Jersey, to the old Church farm. John Dey is shown to be a land holder in Monroe Township, along with John Munford and Mindert Johnson in 1725. There is a record of a deed from Munford and Johnson to John Dye dated December 25th, 1725.

John died between the time he wrote his will, which is dated the 1st of October, 1750, and the time the will was probated on the 8th of March, 1751. His wife Anne and their children are named in this will. John is buried in Perth Amboy, New Jersey. Anne died in 1763, in Middlesex County, New Jersey

By this will dated October 1, 1750, he names his wife Anne, sons John, David, William, James, Vincent, and Joseph, and daughters Anne and katherine. Executors, my son John, my son william and my son-in-law, Lawrence Dey.

He devises to his eldest son John, the just soum of five pounds at 8 S. per ounce to David , the just sum of fifty pounds at 8S. per ounce. To his sons William, James, Vincent, and Joseph and duaghters Anne and Katherine allt, the remainder of the money arising from the sale of the estate to be equally divided amongst them, their heirs, ect. The land was encumbered, the interest on the debt was to be paid by his wife and to whom he leaves the use during her life. Also devises to her during life the personalty after payment of debts except therefrom the debt upon the plantation. After the death of his wife and sale of the property proceeds to be divided as above set forth.

It is supposed tht his wife survved him many years, as his estate had not yet been settled in December of 1769. When James Dye mentions in the codical of his will, the money which is now owing and coming due and payable by virtue of the last will and testament of his father John Dye.

The fmaily record has not been found, therefore the will is the authority as to who were the children of John and Anne Dye. The loss of church records during the War of the Revolution is regretted by all students of family history. The bible of Laurents Dey is extant and gives his wifes age, or birth.

His wife's name was Ann (unknown) it was Anna Brown.,whom married by 1710.She died before Decemeber 13,1763,when her son,James, wrote codicil to his will indicating that"all the money which now is oweing and coming due and payable to me by vertue of the last will and testament of my father John Dye"should be collected and divided among his children.

John spent a number of years in Richmond County,New York.He was listed as "John Lawrence",19 years of age,in the 1706 Staten Island census. In 1715 he was a member of Captain James Poullion's company of Richmond County militia. He was a resident of Perth Amboy,Middlesex County,New Jersey, when he purchased a farm of two hundred acres from Mindart Johnson of the same
place on December 25,1725. the name of the farm was Old Church Farm, east of Cranbury New Jersey. The farm is still in basiscally the same location and is still being farmed.

Perhaps he traveled here earlier to serve as a land agent for family members, since a "John Die" appears on a list of Freeholders of Middlesex County in 1711.On March 8,1737,he deeded a portion oh his land to his son,John Jr. Maps and deeds of the area at this time show John's neighbors
to be Richard Mount,Peter Perrine, the Applgates,John Morford and his half brother and nephew,James Hans and Lawrence Dey.He was on the list of Freeholders for Perth Amboy,Middlesex County in 1750.

John was baptized about 1687 and his will was processed March 8, 1750/51.
