Notes for M
BIOGRAPHY: The following was taken from applications of a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution:
Mathias Brandenburg was born in Germany, tradition says in Brandenburg Castle. He came to America around 1755, and finally to Clark Co., KY, where he reared his family of four teen children.
He married Hester Vulgamore. Many of his children can be found in Clark Co. marriage records. In 1807, Mathias Brandenburg was killed by a William Hardin (Ref: Samuel Haycraft' s History of Elizabethtown, KY, page 162). His widow, Hester lived with her son, Solomon, in her last days and died in Meade Co., KY, in the section that was later named Brandenburg. She is buried in the Peter Fontaine Cemetery on the banks of the Ohio with a fine marker, "Mother of Solomon Brandenburg, died Sept. 19, 1821 in her 77th year." Near is the grave of Elizabeth Swan Kennedy, wife of Solomon , died Sept. 28, 1838 in her 50th year. Mathias Brandenburg 's will may be found in Clark Co., Ky records.
While living in Hampshire Co., VA, during the Revolution, there is record of Mathias's contributing to the cause of liberty. No doubt, there were many more contributions than the simple one found in the record of Hampshire Co. at the Court held for Hampshire the 12th day of Aug. 1783, Mathias Brandenburg for 1 blanket, 4.1 pound payment.
