      198. William Radcliff, born Abt. 1748; died Unknown. He married 199. Deborah Hughes.

      199. Deborah Hughes, born Abt. 1748; died Unknown.

Notes for William Radcliff:
I am searching for information reguarding William Ratliff/Radcliff, who was living in Hardy County in 1820 but moved to Lewis County by 1825. Most of his family moved with him to Lewis County when he came. He is listed in the 1830 census of Lewis County. He was listed as living in Lewis Co. in 1835 on the militia pension list report of Sec. War. His age was shown as 74 in 1833. I believe he is the father of Jesse Thomas Ratliff, my ggg grandfather.

The following from HCPL-L at RootsWeb Sat, 9 Jun 2001
From: WVaToo@aol.com (Nancy Jackson)

The following information was in some papers I copied at the HCPD Library:
>From Paper in the Brown Bible, written by Edward Marshall Brown, grandfather of the late Winnifred Brown Scott of Harrisville.
"From Bible of Susanna Stalnaker.
Daniel Stephen Radliff from England to James River his children.
John, wife Catherine Fry
Stephen, William, Edward, Ben, Polly Cobun, Jenny Fry, Richard
Charles. (William, John, and Polly all lived in or around Harrison County or Lewis).

William born ca 1740 probably on lower James River, VA., as he came with the Hughes, and Carpenters. (Taken from Boyd Stutlers notes), married Debra Hughes, daughter of Thomas. William was the second settler on Hackers Creek (now Lewis County). He also owned several hundred acres of land in Wood
County, where he went to live in later years.
Children;
1. Susannah m. 1788 Samuel Stalnaker in Randolph County.
2. Martha m. 4-9-1796 Samuel Bonnett, in Harrison County.
3. Deborah married a Badgley
4. Catherine married a Gillespi
5. Sarah m. 3-3-1795 John Carpenter
6. John married 11-6-1789 Judith Carpenter in Harrison Co.
7. Stephen
8. Jane (Jenny m. 8-25-1800 John Starcher, Harrison County

Note: there are no end quotes on this typewritten document so it is difficult to know how much of this information was on a paper in the Bible of Susanna Stalnaker.

Also, in the papers at HCPD are the following notes:
Wood County Records
2-27-1810 Stephen Radcliff married Rachel Westsil (Whetsel, Whetzel)
1-10-1806 Deborah Radcliff m. Benajah Badgely-both by Reese Woolf
Children of Stephen
1-7-1836-William R. m. Jemima Coplinger (This should read Caplinger)
Elizabeth m. John Coplinger, both by Reese Woolf (Again, should read
Caplinger)
6-23-1840 - Jane Radcliff m. William Matson, by James B. Austin
12-1-1842 Drusilla Radcliff m. Silas Riley, by John D. Riley
8-7-1855 - At home of Stephen Radcliff, Rachel Radcliff, age 26 m. Serrzo
Harper, age 22, dau. of Stephen & Rachel, Serrzo, son of Henson and Nancy by E. McPherson

William Radcliff's will is recorded in Wood Co. I will try to find time to copy the will and send to the list tomorrow. BTW we do know from deeds that William's wife was Debra but was she Debra Hughes as stated by most family compilers based on I believe the paper found in the Stalnaker Bible. Some say Debra Hughes daughter of Thomas m. a Bibbee but I believe I am positive in saying that this Debra was the d\o Jesse Hughes as stated in the marriage bond in Harrison Co.

  Notes for David Jonathan Casto:
David lived in Sugar Fork, Upshure Co., WV & is found in the 1860 census with his wife. David was born in that part of Monongalia Co., VA that is now part of Green Co., PA.

David was one of the original trustee of Mt. Lebanon Church near Buckhannon, Upshur Co., WV. In the family bible owned by David J. CASTO, was written the following: The funeral of David J. CASTO was preached from the forty ninth chapter and thirty third verse of the Book of Genesis by Rev. E. BENNETT on the 5 day of November 1865. David and his son, Washington, were witnesses to a land purchase by Nelson ROBINSON in Aug 1835 in Lewis Co., (W)V. David bought his father's farm when John CASTO, Sr. moved to Jackson Co., WV. David stayed on the Sugar Camp Run of Turkey Run next door to his Uncle David CASTO's farm. 1860 Upshur Co., WV census lists David and Sarah. 1880 Upshur Co., WV census shows Sarah living with son, Job.

* From the research of Gloria Jean HUSK, a member of HCPD and a decendant of the CASTO line thru Job CASTO and his wife, Samantha MARPLE. ECHOES OF GLORY by Gary Wayne, pg. 598-605. ROBERT MARPLE, himself a retired postmaster of Rock Cave, Upshur Co., WV, sent the records for postal stations and their postmasters. *

Mrs. Snarr has traced the West Virginia Castos, Regers, and Marples, and compiled a manuscript of approximately 200 pages on these families and allied lines who settled in present Barbour; Harrison, Lewis, Monongalia, Randolph and Upshur counties. Of interest to many West Virginians, the manuscript is available on microfilm in the West Virginia Collection of the University Library.

The Casto line is traced from David J. (1780-1865, who is buried in the Mt. Lebanon Cemetery near Buckhannon. Chiseled on his headstone are the lines:

Though he sleeps--his memory doeth live
and cheering comfort to his mourners give.
he followed virtue as his truest guide,
Lived as a Christian, and as a Christian died.

David married Rachel (?) Westfall in 1800 and Sarah Ward in 1823. The descendants of the 17 offspring of these two marriages are traced through 1954.

  Notes for John S. Westfall:
Name: Lorna Westfall Dunklee
Email: ldunklee@erols.com

John S. was my great-great grandfather. He was born 1 Nov 1800 in (W)VA, probably Harrison
County. He died in Meigs County, OH 27 Jan 1876, and is buried in Mt. Olive Cemetery in
Columbia Twp, Meigs Co. alongside his wife, Elizabeth Queen Westfall [born c1805 per census,
died 11 April 1888.] They moved to Meigs County around 1854.

I have details regarding their children, among which is my great-grandfather, Zachariah S.
Westfall, b Harrison Co, (W)VA 3 Jan 1831 m. in Meigs County, OH on 21 Dec 1854 to Cordelia
McClain, daughter of Thomas and Mary (Porter) McClain, who had gone to Meigs County from
Ritchie County, WV sometime between 1850 and 1854. Their previous home had been in Mercer
County, PA where Cordelia was born. Zachariah [not "Jack" as I have seen on some other gedcom
files] and Cordelia left OH in 1879 to go first to Jewell County, KS where they appear on the
1880 census, and then to Nodaway County, MO where they had a farm near Barnard. They are both
buried in Salem Churchyard near Barnard. Zachariah served in 194th OH Vol. Infantry in the
Civil War.
