Notes for R
OBERT GRAMMER BRANHAM:
Bob's middle name, Grammer, was the last name of the Doctor who delivered him.

At the time of the 1910 Census, Bob and Elizabeth Babcock, his first wife, were living with her mother and step-father, Mable and Herbert Gambrell, and Elizabeth's sister, Edith Babcock, at 1301 Louisiana west of Evans Avenue in southeast Fort Worth, Texas. Four of Bob's siblings, Ernest, Ethel, Ruby, and Beulah, and James Hampton II, Ernest's son, were all living with Bob's parents, James Hampton I and Frances Armenia Corbin Branham, at 1316 Arizona Avenue. Arizona was one block west of Louisiana which later was to become a part of the right-of-way for IH 35W when it was built.

Although Bob had owned the house at 837 E Jefferson in southeast Fort Worth since it was built in 1918, the family from his second marriage had lived across the street at 836 E Jefferson. This house, on the SW corner of E Jefferson and Evans Avenue was owned by John George Lux, the widower uncle of Bob's first wife. "Uncle", as the family referred to Mr Lux, lived in a small shotgun type house on the east end of the same lot. The family continued to live there until Mr Lux died in 1937 when the property was deeded to the North Texas Traction Company (later known as the Fort Worth Transit Company).

At that time, they moved across the street into the house at 837 E Jefferson which had been rented to the James Marshall Garrett family. "Skipper" Garrett was a neighborhood barber and "Mama" Garrett worked as a dressmaker in their home. When the Branhams had to move, the Garretts moved to a house a few blocks south on E Baltimore east of Evans Avenue. As soon as it became available, they moved into the house next door to the Branhams at 1816 Evans Avenue on the NW corner of Jefferson and Evans Avenue. Lela Frances, the youngest Garret daughter, was often used as a baby sitter for the Branham children as they were growing up.

Bob worked as a butcher with his brother, William Walter, in the 11th Street Meat Market on the northwest corner of 11th and Houston Streets in downtown Fort Worth until the 1929 Depression. That location is now a part of the Southwestern Bell Telephone Company building. The family lived from hand to mouth during the early days of the depression. In the middle 1930s, Bob was hired as the downtown route man by Worth Baking Company, bakers of "Big Dandy" bread. The bakery was operated by by two Greek brothers and was located on the west side of Lamar Street north of West Lancaster in the west part of downtown Fort Worth. He left to find other employment when the bakery was sold to the Holsum Baking Company. He quickly found employment as the downtown route man for Arch Myrick, owner of Market Produce Company, wholesaler of poultry and eggs. The plant was then located at First and Calhoun on the east side of downtown Fort Worth. The product line included the "Sunco" brand of chickens and turkeys. He was employed there until his retirement in 1964. After spending about 3 months in retirement, he went back to work as a part-time downtown salesman for the same company.

In 1949, Bob experienced a very serious infection of both hands as a result of being around the live poultry at Market Produce Company. He spent several weeks in All Saints Hospital on the southeast corner of Magnolia St and Eighth Avenue in south Fort Worth.
