      1057. ?

Notes for Robert Hodgson:
Robert Hodgson the "first" was the first Hodson to have come to America. Before that, back in England, Robert the "first" joined the forces of Cromwell during the English Civil War, after the death of his first wife and daughter. When the war was over he was imprisoned for having killed a fellow officer (though there is no proof that Robert was an officer). Another inmate at Exter Prison was George Fox, founder of the "Friends" - later called "Quakers", who converted many prisoners, including Robert. Soon after Fox was released from prison he was able to secure the release of his prison converts, including Robert. Robert then became a Quaker missionary and evangelist in England. He was imprisoned again in the town of Reading, 35 miles west of London, for failing to remove his hat in the presence of a Magistrate.

A Robert Fowler of Bridlington, a North Sea port, had visions in which he was instructed to build a ship and transport Quaker missionaries to the American colonies - especially to Massachusetts where Quakers were then being persecuted. Robert Hodgson heard of Fowler's visions and assisted him in the completion of his small vessel, later named "Woodhouse". They sailed to London in March 1657, picked up ten or eleven other Quaker missionaries and left for America in June 1657. Two months later they landed in the Dutch New Amsterdam settlement, instead of the intended Massachusetts Bay colony. No one abroad ship knew anything about navigation and Fowler said "every day the eleven would gather on deck and pray for a sense of direction."

A few days later Fowler and the small ship left for Massachusetts but Robert and two other missionaries elected to remain at New Amsterdam. Robert soon ran afoul of the Dutch authorities at New Amsterdam for his fervent preaching and was imprisoned. He suffered such severe punishment that citizens (including a personal plea from Governor Peter Stuyvesant's sister Anna) persuaded Governor Stuyvesant to release him with the promise that Robert Hodgson would leave New Amsterdam and never return.

There are no further public records until George Fox requested Robert return to Yorkshire in 1859 for a meeting. Robert married again in 1659, either in Rhode Island or Yorkshire. He returned to America in 1651 and seems to have remained in the Rhode Island area until 1682 when he received a personal land grant from William Penn for 10,000 acres on the Susquehanna River, probably near Stockerham, north of Philadelphia. Robert remained in Pennsylvania for the rest of his life.
