Probably the William "McCanless" who received a deed to 296 acres from Benjamin Borden Sr for land in Orange Co, VA (later Rockbridge County); deed dated 16 Aug 1742. He and his wife Elizabeth had come into that area (about 1740, from Ireland) and settled on land located on Borden's Great Tract of 92,100 acres, which together with the 118,491 acres adjoining in the William manor, covered most of the land in present day Augusta and Rockbridge Counties, Virginia

4 May 1768: Wm. McCandless testified to a land transfer from William Robinson to James Crawford.

16 May 1768: William McCandless to Andrew Moore, Ł60, 150 acres; corner Hugh Weir and Alexander Greer; corner William McCandless and Alexander Geer; William Alexander's line; corner Hugh Beard and John Weir. Teste: Thomas Wilson, Samuel Wilson, William Moore.

14 May 1770: William McCandless to George Campbell, Ł119, 183 Acres of Borden's 92,100; corner William Alexander; corner Alexander Greer Teste: Wm. Alexander, Andrew Moore, Alexander Greer, Thomas Wilson.

We place his birth at about 1713, based upon: "William McCanless, aged about thirty-six, being sworn, says that he never saw Francis McCown steal, pick or rob John Lockhart's pocketbook, 11th April 1749."

Notes for John McCandless:
The pension abstract for John McCandless gives his birth year (1755) and marriage date (5 Apr 1785 in Greenbrier Co. VA). Additionally it gives the birth date of some of his children.

He was in John Stuarts Company during the Dunmore war of 1774 and fought in the Point Pleasent battle.

His name appears with his brother in the 1790 Virginia census as "Wm. McCanless and Jno. McCanless."

Also, "Before the Greenbrier County Court in 1787, John McCandless made affidavit that he had served three years in the brigade commanded by Colonel Benjamin Templeton during the Revolutionary War. " [The West Virginians in the American Revolution, p. 184.]
