Miscellaneous Gillespie Information From a letter to my grandfather, Edward A. Gillespie, dated 2/10/1977: Dear Mr. Gillespie; I am trying to find a descendant of a Jacob Gillespie and his wife Lucinda (Coley) Gillespie. This Jacob Gillespie was my great uncle and died 1919 in Ponca City, Okla. According to the information that I have, this Jacob was born around 1853 in Smyth County, Virginia. He married 14th of July 1874 to Lucinda Coley. I know they were living in Ponca City area in 1907 and 1908 as my father, Henry S. Gillespie, lived for a year on a farm near Ponca City. Henry S. Gillespie was the son of William R. Gillespie who was a brother of Jacob. I was only 2 or 3 years old when my father lived on the farm near Ponca City, so I do not remember the names of the children of Jacob Gillespie. If you descend from Jacob Gillespie, will you please send me the names of all his children and his grandchildren, etc? I am sending a stamped, self-addressed envelope for your use in answering. If you do not descend from Jacob, I would like to know who your Gillespie ancestors are, as I correspond with others who are researching the various Gillespie lines. My grandfather, William R. Gillespie, died in 1888 in Schuyler Co., Illinois. And since my father was only 11 years old at the time, he did not know much about his Gillespie ancestors. So I have been trying to find out as much as I can about them, and writing down a family history for my three sons. I know Jacob and William R. Gillespie were sons of Reese A. & Sarah (Hanshew) Gillespie who were married 1848 in Smyth Co., Va. Reese A. Gillespie was a son of Robert Gillespie who died 1858 in Smyth Co., Va. Robert Gillespie was the son of James Gillespie & wife Isabella; this James died Aug 18, 1834 in Smyth Co., Virginia, and I have a copy of his will. I think James was the son of a William Gillespie who had a wife Mary, but I cannot prove this as yet. If you descend from Jacob Gillespie, did he leave a list of his ancestors, or did any of his descendants remember who he said his ancestors were? Such a list would either prove or disprove the list of ancestors that I have found. Thank you very much for any help you can give me. Sincerely, Elva M. (Gillespie) Bowles Letter from Mrs. Bowles dated 29 June 1983: Dear Toni, I am sorry to say that I have about as little about the Mason/Fleming/Lewis County Kentucky Gillespies as I do about any of the early Kentucky Gillespies. I have never gotten to the county records there. I do have the census records, but you probably have those also. In case you don't: 1800 Galaspe, William Mason County, Ky. From other sources, I know that this William came from Pennsylvania. He married Polly McSwain. You'll find DAR records for this William, and you may want to send for a copy of an application. 1810 Gallaspey, William Lewis County, Ky. May well be the same one as above as Lewis county was cut off from Mason county in 1807. In the household were: 2 males under 10 1 female under 10 1 male 16-26 1 female 16-26 1 male 45 and up 1 female 45 and up Gellaspee, George Fleming County 1 male 16-26 1 female 16-26 Gillaspie, William Fleming County 1 male 16-26 2 females 10-16 1 male 45 and up 1 female 26-46 1820 Gallaspie, Isaiah Fleming County This is probably the Isaiah who is in Putnam County, Indiana, in 1840. Either he stopped somewhere else between Kentucky and Indiana or he is the Yedock on the 1830 Ky. Census 2 males under 10 1 female under 10 1 male 26-45 1 female 16-26 William Galespie Lewis County 2 males under 10 1 female under 10 1 male 10-16 1 female 10-16 1 male 45 and up 1 female 26-45 1 female 45 and up 1830 Galaspie, Yedock Fleming County 2 males under 5 1 female under 5 1 male 30-40 1 female 10-15 1 female 30-40 1840 Gallaspie, Jonathan Fleming County 1 male under 5 1 female 5-10 1 male 10-15 1 female 30-40 1 male 30-40 1 female 60-70 It appears this could be the household of William G in Lewis County in 1820. William apparently has died. According to the DAR records, he died in 1834. I am including copies of my notes from the 1850 Census for these counties. The only possibility I can see here is John T. (Don't pay any attention to initials. Caps are very hard to decipher in the old records and without the rest of the name, it is difficult to be sure of them.) Of course, I don't have the records for Hammonds or Hammers. Mrs. George Vickery (Betty), 7814 Windcombe Boulevard, Indianapolis, In. 46240, is of this line of Gillespies, I think. It would be worth your while probably to write her. I am inclined to think most or all these Gillespies are sons and grandsons of William who married Polly McSwain. I may be wrong, of course; there is nearly always one in any area who is not a brother. I would suggest that you write the Lewis County Courthouse at Vanceburg and ask if there is a will or probate record for William who died in 1834. If the reply is negative, you might try the Fleming County Courthouse at Flemingsburg. This is going about it backwards, but if there is a will or a probate record, you'll get a lot of information which if not immediately helpful probably will be in time. I will keep watch for your John. I will be very appreciative if you will share with me what you are able to find. I began working on all Gillespies because my own Gillespie line has been so difficult to trace. Mine came from Pennsylvania into Virginia thence into Kentucky - Wayne County- which is on the Tennessee border. I keep working on all Gillespies in the belief that somewhere in some unexpected place I will find the proof I need as to my ancestry. Sincerely, Georgia Rankin Cole PS James Gelaspy who M. You wondered how I got your father's name. About a year ago I bought a book on "Southwest Virginia Families" by Dr. David B. Trimble, 607 River Road, San Antonio, Tex. 78212. He has some of the same Gillespie ancestors in that part of Virginia as I do, so I wrote him and he gave me the name of a Mrs. Ethel Koger, 1017 No. Elon, Ponca City, Okla. She had written him about another family, but he thought she could give me the names of Gillespies in her area. She sent me the following Gillespie names: Edward A. Gillespie, 800 W. Doolin, Blackwell, Okla. (I wrote him). R.L. Gillespie 923 West Padon St., Blackwell, Ok. Robert Gillespie, Jr. 703 W. Coolidge, Blackwell, Ok. Will Gillespie, 605 North 6th Blackwell, Ok. Ella M. Gillespie, Rural Route West, Blackwell, Ok. Lawrence C. Gillespie , 209 North 3rd, Tonkawa, Okla. Leo V. Gillespie 1801 Yale, Ponca City, Okla. Richard Gillespie, 502 North Oak, Ponca City. (wrote him but letter was returned to me.) I just picked out one name from Blackwell and one from Ponca City and wrote them. Guess the one at Ponca City had either died or moved away. I have not written the others. No, I have no records of a Will A. Gillespie of Overton, Texas. So I can't help you on that. I have 57 names in my Gillespie card file to whom I have written. I looked through all of them but do not find any who had Gillespies in Kansas. There are many, many John Gillespies in my records, but I find none that sounds like your John H. Gillespie. My book on the Southwest Virginia Families has a John H. Gillespie, but his grandfather John G. Gillespie was born in 1839 so this John H. would be too young to be yours. His grandfather, John G. Gillespie, was the son of James Gillespie of Smyth Co., Virginia who was a brother of the Robert Gillespie who is my gr-gr-grandfather; they being sons of a James Gillespie of Smyth Co., Virginia, who married Isabel, the dau. of another Robert Gillespie of Botetourt Co., Virginia. I have typed you some records of several Gillespie Lines. I have copies of most of the wills I have listed. Some of the other Gillespie lines were sent me by others. Note that one of the lines does have some Gillespies in Kansas, but this was not the line of the lady who sent this information to me; she had received it from someone else. I doubt that any of these will really help you, but thought you might enjoy reading them. Keep the copies. Although I cannot find any connection at this time of your Gillespie line and mine, I know just what you mean about families that went west losing track of their ancestors, and of children being raised by other families and who worked for their keep. The book "Annals of Tazwell Co. Virginia" by Harmon has this to say about my gr-gr-grandfather, Robert Gillespie of Smyth Co., Va.: "His sons, except one sone, Williaim H., all went west, probably to Missouri and a genealogical record of their families is not available." Robert had 4 sons: John, James, Reese (mine) and William H. I have been unable to find anything more about the sons John and James. The son Reese (mine) was born ca 1828 so I suppose they were a few years older. I have list of children on the son, William H. My gr-grandfather, Reese A. Gillespie, took his sons and wife to southern Missouri prior to the Civil War; he had left Smyth Co., Va., before 1860. But I have been unable to find where he lived in southern Missouri and my father did not know. Reese and his wife died in an epidemic in the 1860's and their 4 sons went back to Virginia. One the way back, they stopped over night or longer with a family (name unknown) who took the smallest son, David, to raise. So all track of him has been lost. I do not know what became of another of the sons, Andrew, who was the oldest. In the 1870 census of Smyth Co., Va., my grandfather William R. (the 2nd son) was living with a Buchanan family and Jacob (who died in Ponca City) was living with a Hubble family. My grandfather, William R. Gillespie, married in Smyth Co., Va., and most of his children were born there including my father b.1877. Wm. R. brought his family to Schuyler Co., Illinois in 1883 and he died there 1888 at age 37; his wife died a few years later in 1892. So the children were taken by different families to raise; no two in the same family. For that reason my father did not have much information about his ancestors except names of his grandpartens, and his father's brothers. He had his mother's bible but it just lists her children, and the names of her sisters and brothers who were Custers. Most of my Gillespie research has been in Virginia and the adjoining states. If you just knew where your grandfather was born, I might have something to help you. I will certainly write you if I find any mention of your line anywhere. But all these old Gillespie families used the same first names for their sons, such as Robert, John, James, Thomas, George, William, David and Andrew. Of course these were all common first names, but it does make it difficult to be certain which family they come from. And the spelling of the last name has really been "murdered" in the records, such as Gelaspy, Glaspy, Gillasby, Gillaspie, Gillispie, etc. Even the birth of my brother Carl in the Adams Co., Illinois records had Gillespie spelled wrong, and his was spelled different than mine. I just had the one brother, and he died in 1968. I know my father's uncle, Jacob Gillespie, died 1919 in Ponca City, Okla., as I have an old letter his widow wrote my father that year. She only mentioned a daughter Lorie, and I wanted to know the names of all the children of Jacob. My mother had an old pillow top on which people had signed their names and the names outlines with colored thread. Among these names were those of Jacob and Lucinda Gillespie, Claude E. Gillespie, W.R.A. Gillespie and Emmett Gillespie. I suppose these could be sons of Jacob, as I do not know who else they could be. We lived on a farm near Ponca City just one year when I was only 2 or 3 years old, then returned to Adams Co., Ill. And I never thought to ask my father about his Uncle Jacob's children before he died in 1965 Let me know if I can be of any further help to you. Elva M. Gillespie resided Lone Wolf, Oklahoma Part of a letter to my mother dated 2/1/1980: I have found very little more on my Gillespie ancestors. No wills to be found for several generations of them, and also marriage records for some of them seem to be lost. My father's mother was a Custer and I have found recently one of the brothers of my grk-gr-grandfather John Custer who lived in Botetourt Co., Va. A magazine that I take on southwest Virginia listed deaths in one county that had his name and parents names in it. His father was Isaac Custer who m. Regina Copp in Botetourt Co., Va., in 1795. I can really sympathize with you for having an ancestor raised by another family and that fact making research doubly difficult. My father was orphaned at age 14 when his mother died; his father having died earlier when dad was only 10. He remembered his father, of course, but when you're young you don't pay much attention to what your parents say about their ancestors. My father's father, William R. Gillespie, was also orphaned when in his teens and was raised by a Buchanan family. My father had 2 brothers (both died in teens) and three sisters, and after their mother died, all lived with different families who took them to raise in hopes of getting work out of them. My gr-grandfather, Reese A. Gillespie, and 3 brothers, John, James and David, were all born in Smyth Co., Va., but left for "the west" before 1860. They had another brother, William H. Gillespie who remained in Virginia. I have been unable to find any trace of John, James, and David.. My dad thought he remembered his father saying that Reese took his family somewhere in southern Missouri where Reese and his wife died in an epidemic (in early 1860's) and then their 4 sons, Andrew, William R., Jacob, and David went back to Virginia. But I do not know if Reese's brothers also settled in Missouri or not. Wm. R. Gillespie's brother, Jacob eventually lived in Ponca City, Oklahoma where he died. From Elva Bowles This was sent me and I do not know where it was found. Gillespie Bible Records: Births: James Gillespie was born in Lorain Co., Ohio, June 22, 1830 Martha E.
