Samuel Washington Atkinson (1797-1873) is the ggg-grandfather of Loris. Born in Robeson County, North Carolina, Samuel was reared and educated in Madison County, Georgia. There he met and married Nancy Jordan (1792-1871), daughter of Thomas Jordan (1758-1850) and Priscilla Applewhite (1762-1850). Samuel was a schoolteacher by profession and a hatter by trade.
