The Briggs and Devine Family HistoryUpdated May 24, 2008 |
A site dedicated to information surrounding the ancestors and descendants of my paternal ancestors, Philip Devine (a.k.a. Thomas Hilton Tennant) & Christopher Briggs. Philip Devine was born in Essex, England c.1761. He was tried for breaking and entering in 1786, was sentenced to seven years transportation, and found himself aboard the ship 'Alexander' on his way to Sydney as part of the First Fleet in 1788. Philip lived in Sydney Town for a while before being taken aboard the 'Sirius' to Norfolk Island for the first settlement in 1790. In March 1805 he was taken to Hobart after the settlement was closed down. He did not stay in Hobart for long, and moved up to Sydney some time in 1806. He died in 1821 and is buried at St Johns churchyard at Wilberforce, NSW. Christopher Briggs was born in the village of Austerfield, Yorkshire in 1801. He was tried at Doncaster in 1831 for the theft of wheat and was soon transported to Van Diemen's Land for seven years. He was assigned to Willam Adams Brodribb near Bothwell in 1832, where he stayed until he received his Ticket of Leave. He settled in the area and took up farming with his brother Charles. Christopher married Frances Glover in 1838. By 1860 they had moved to Blackman's Bay and lived their remaining years in the area. After Frances died in 1874, Christopher married Mary Barden. He died in 1885 and is buried in St Clements churchyard at Kingston, Tasmania. The direct line of the Briggs and Devine families form a small part of my family history. I will be expanding the information on this site to incorporate other Tasmanian families. |
