| This surname appears in Puerto Rico from the mid 1800's to the present under various forms or spellings. We are all, however, related, descendents of one of the three BRIGANTU brothers that have been found, Crusiano, Rafael and Carmelo. The known variations of the surname in Puerto Rico are: BREGANTE BRIGANTE BRIGANTI BRIGANTTI BRIGANTY BBRIGANTTY The surname arrived from CORSICA (with Crusiano) and then from Italy (with his two brothers). It is not known what their original names were before they were made pronounceable in Spanish. It is believed that the names were Corsican (such as "Carmelu" for Carmelo, or "Crusianu" for Crusiano). We would love to hear from you if you are related to the BRIGANTI or if you have any information you would like to share with us. This would include any information on the family from Corsica, France or Italy, or from anywhere else in the world. |
