| I have been researching my family since 1993, looking for the answers to the ever-present question, "Where did my roots begin?". I have learned much of the recent family history but have not as yet determined our point of origin on the Continent. Though O'Guin sounds as if it would be Irish, a trip to Ireland resulted in the disheartening news that there were no O'Guin's there. Most of what I have found are my grandfather, Harlan O'Guin, who grew up in Paris, TN, my greatgrandmother, Cora E. O'Guin, his mother, and her siblings, Ada, Monroe,Delia and Porter, and my greatgreatgrandfather, Newton O'Guin. Cora found herself to be a single mother and married a widowed tobacco farmer named Jefferson Davis Gore, who had children of his own. Cora & J.D. moved their family to Kansas City where they spent the remainder of their days. Cora and her sister, Delia, raised Harlan's daughter, Lois (my mother)after her mother, Jestine Aleen Davis O'Guin, died of complications of childbirth. Because of this blending of the generations, Lois was raised with a deep appreciation of her roots and the desire to learn more about her family's past. |
