The family history included on this site has the ancestors of Maurice Gallagher, Robert Manning and Thomas Riley. Maurice brought his family to America in 1850 on the "Guild Ship Lucy Thompson." Making the voyage with him were his wife Bridget and 3 of their childre, Patrick, James and Mary. Mary became ill and died on the ship before it reached America. Son John, who was 10 years old at the time, remained in Ireland with relatives due to lack of money. John came to America 2 years later in 1852. Robert Manning arrived in Manhattan, IL on an 'Orphan Train' from an orphanage in New York City at the age of 9 years. He traveled with his brother Thomas who was 11 years old. Robert was taken in by the Patrick Gallagher family while Thomas went to live with the Dennis Lawlor family. Mr Lawlor was Mrs. Patrick Gallagher's brother. Robert remained with the Gallagher's into adulthood. Thomas and Catherine (Carroll) Riley, were both natives of Roscommon county, Ireland. Thomas emigrated to the new world on a sailing vessel at the age of nineteen years in 1835. He lived in New York for about 2 years. Arriving at Quebec, Canada around 1837. He remained there for eight or nine years, after which he made his way to Boston, Massachusetts, where he lived for two or three years, moving then to Vermont. He heard of the many advantages in the new and rapidly growing west, he came to Will county in 1838 (or 1849), locating on a farm in Channahon township. Catherine came to this country in 1843 and moved to Will county in 1848. The information shown here is not complete and may contain some errors.
