The will of COL. THOMAS GODWIN, presiding Justice of Nansemond County, Virginia. This will, dated 1676/7, gives no date of probate, but it is generally conceded that he died in that year. His will is as follows:-

In the name of God, Amen. I Thomas Godwin of Nansemond County, Gent., being riche and weke butt of perfect memory do make this my last will and testament in manner and form as followeth, Viz: I bequeath my soul to God and my body to the earth to be decently buried. I give unto my son EDMUND a parcel of land by me purchased of James Lange containing about three hundred acres lying and being on the Western Branch of Nansemond, and also my cattle that belonged to the said plantation purchased of the said Lange with their increase. I give also to my said son EDMUND one hundred and seventy-five acres of land lying and being on the Western Branch of Nansemond joining to the lands of Mr. Jeremy Exum to have and to hold to him and his heirs forever.

I give also to my said son EDMUND one feather bed and furniture and after the death of my wife, I bequeath to him two negroe men by name of Ben and Jack. I give unto my daughter ElLIZABETH after the death of my wife one negroe girl by the name of Wall and her heirs forever. (I suppose there may be about forty thousand pounds of tobacco due amongs Mr. Burgess' children after ----- payed for their keeping and all other disbursements the wich I desire may be paid them.) I give to my wife what goods household gear movables and immovables that belong to me and all other things whatsoever tobacco excepted. And last of all I appoint my son THOMAS Godwin my whole and sole executor to see this my last will and testament performed. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this twenty-fourth day of March, 1676/7.

Elizabeth Godwin md. 1st, James Webb, who died before 1675. She had several children by him. Her second husband was Joseph Woory, nephew of Sir John Yeamans. She md. the third time, Samule Bridger. There were no children by the last two marriages. Her will is recorded in Isle of Wight Co., dated 1717.
