2. GEORGE² TOPE (JOHN¹)¹ was born March 03, 1761 in Harpers Ferry, Maryland, and died August 12, 1845 in Carrolton (Centerville), OH. He married (1) CATHERINE STRADDLER. He married (2) MARIA ELIZABETH BOWER¹ July 03, 1804 in Carroll Co., OH, daughter of CONRAD BOWER and MARIE ?.

Went to Ohio around 1800.

In the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, about a mile and a half NE of Petersburg in Union Twp, Carroll County, Ohio stands the marble slab which marks the last resting place of George Tope (the first), who died Aug. 12, 1845, age 82 years, 5 months and 10 days. According to two of his children, he was most certainly born March 3, 1761 and hence was in his eighty-fifth year. No tombstone has been found for the grave of his first wife, Catherine Straddler. Her body was evidently interred somewhere in Jefferson county, Ohio. Elizabeth Bower Tope, second wife of George Tope, was buried by the side of her husband, having died, according to the tombstone on May 7, 1855 - aged about 70 years.
