| This site tracks the Southern Branch of the Brownings. They are descended from Captain John Browning who arrived on the Abagail in College Lands Virginia from Gravesend England in 1621. Captain John's descendants are traced through his grandson John b.1648 from Virginia through West Virginia into the 20th Century. There are currently about 1200 people in this database.(It is estimated that Captain John has over 250,000 descendants.) The line is fairly direct through Enos Browning, who fought in the Revolutionary war, down to my Papaw, Chester Hassel Browning, who, along with three of his brothers, fought in WWII. In between are many Civil War veterans that fought with the Wildcats in the Confederate Army including Jim Browning, born 1810, Private, 45th Bat. VA Cav. (D) Oct.1, 1862 - Aug 1, 1863, and four of Jim's sons: Andrew Jackson Browning born 1839, Private 36th Va Cav. (D) and Corp. 45th Bat. of VA cav. (D), Charles Wesley Browning, born 1836, SGT. 36th VA Cav. (D)SGT. 34th Bat VA. Cav. (D) June 1861-April 1865. Francis C. "Frank" Browning, born 1845, PVT. 34th Bat. VA Cav. 1863- 1865, served 2 years , 2 months, 17 days, shot three times, and Josiah S. Browning, born 1832, 1st SGT. 34th Bat. VA Cav. (D). Other prominent surnames included are Ellis, Gore, Vance, DesMarest, Lloyd, and Earle. I hope you find the site useful. This site is made possible with the endless support and research of my Papaw, Chester Hassell (Hack) Browning. Information on Civil War records is taken from : Ranger Area Civil War Veterans, Laurel Hill and Harts Creek Districts, A list Compiled by Harold R. Smith and Brandon R. Kirk, 1996. |
