Notes for C
ATHERINE GLASS:
Notes about the Bethel Evangelical cemetery. The original Bethel Church was built in 1845 and then rebuilt in 1872. An article about the church appeared in the 1976 Bicentennial Edition of the History of Robeson Township. The book is on file at the Tri County Heritage Society in Morgantown. In the early 1960's, William Beam and some of his family rescued the cemetery from years of neglect. At this time the grounds were overgrown with trees and brush and many tombstones were down. Several family members donated time and money and the brush was cleared and grass was planted. William secured a deed to the property and paid to have the land surveyed. William and his wife continued to keep it mowed into their seventies and until his death in 1991. It was a all day affair mowing with push mowers and hand clippers at least three times a summer. A tree was planted in his honor on the property after his passing in 1991. His sons and other family members have continued to keep the cemetery mowed up to the present in the wishes of their parents. In the spring of 1999, after learning of the Beams tradition Gerald Brown started assisting in the care of the Cemetery.
