(I recall finding an entry for a Laura Thurston in 1870 in Newport, RI in which she is listed as single. It is likely she and WGP married shortly thereafter and lived either in NYC or elsewhere in Westfield.) 1880 (Page 39?) William G. Peckham 31 Lawyer Laura 30 Mary 4 Laura 2 Margarette (Sp?) 5 mos. Plus three servants are listed. No mention of Margarette anywhere else. Perhaps died in childhood. On the other hand, given the age of Ruth below, perhaps they changed her name or used a middle name or nickname when she got older? Last possibility is that this is one (or two) adopted children in which a name change occurred or a new adoption occurred on the death of the first. 1900 Birthdate Age Occupation William Peckham Feb? 1849 51 Lawyer Laura Oct. 1849 50 Mary July? 1876 24 Laura Sept. 1877 22? Note that “years resident” entry indicates they moved into this house in Mountainside in 1875. This does not preclude them being resident in Westfield before that date. 1930 Home Value Age Where Born Yrs. Married Occupation Paul T. Peckham $30,000 46 NJ 25 Blank Mary (Wife) 55 Indiana 35 Teacher at Private School Barbara 11 NY John 11 NY Roberta (Adopted) 16 NY Note that Roberta is listed as an adopted child. This is the only mention I have found of this. Perhaps significant, given terms of W. G. Peckham’s will, which stated that adopted children would only inherit as provided in the will. This apparently left Roberta out of inheriting her share of her adoptive parents share, if they were dead at the time of WGP’s death. Note that no profession was listed for Paul. I believe his family moved to CT shortly after this census. Per his father’s will, a settlement of the residual estate should have occurred on or by this time, including the passing of title to the family estate/farm on Hillside Ave. to either his stepmother or a third party. By the 1930’s, farming was dying out in this area, since a building boom was under way. Paul’s occupation (from the town directories) is listed in several ways, including, “Poultry - 1912”, “Kennels - 1913”, “Kennels - 1916”, and he apparently inherited the cows on his father’s estate/farm. Paul was a Princeton graduate, but there is no indication of a profession other than the above. My guess is that he kept ownership of various properties and was a landlord, including his house. His house was rented out to several families before being torn down and replaced by a small office building in 1983-4. I recall that the last renter group was a bunch of single British engineers, and one committed suicide in the house. My father had just contracted to sell our house next door, and apparently the owner snuck through a zoning change to convert the property to commercial use, before the new owner of our house could object. The other adjoining land now has a 7-11 convenience store and a decorator’s shop in what is known as the Bird’s corner house. The Bird’s corner house had previously been a realty office for decades, and Paul’s barn/stable was a book store, until it burned down. (Now a vacant lot.) The current owner of the office building is an LLC, and may still be owned by the family. The other commercial properties may also be owned by the family, but I have not checked this out. By the way, the $30,000 valuation for his house is high, relative to other houses near by, so it sounds like it included the adjacent properties (i.e. the barn, the Bird’s Corner house, and the vacant lot which later acquired a 7-11!) His house was very different. It was pretty small for a family of five, and had only a living room, dining room, kitchen, bath and office that opened to the living room, on the first floor. It was stucco and split beam, with a sunken living room right inside the front door, with the dinning area elevated. I have never seen anything like it. Not really a split level as the rooms upstairs above were one level. The sunken living room had a higher ceiling, and the front wall was all French doors, sort of up and off the floor, leading to a slate patio at the front. Perhaps his brother-in-law, JT Tubby was the architect? This was the last house built (probably around 1911) in what was called High Orchard. The others were constructed 1907-1910. Mary likely taught at either St. Christopher’s Academy, a pre-school one block away on Mountain Ave., or at one of the private schools in Plainfield or Hillside/Elizabeth. St. Christopher’s closed in the late 1950’s and was torn down to make way for a bank. I believe that either Mary Peckham or her daughter Ruth Tubby may have attended a private school in Plainfield, and perhaps that is where Mary taught. This school is today called Wardlaw-Hartridge School, and it is now located in Edison, NJ. The only other private girls’ school along the rail line running through Westfield was Vail-Deane, which was in Hillside/Elizabeth, but it has recently moved and merged with Wardlaw-Hartridge. When Mary Peckham was a girl the school was called The Misses Scribner and Newton's School for Girls (in Plainfield.) It subsequently became the Hartridge School, and that probably was its name when Ruth Tubby was a girl. Note that no servants are listed. However, the old family servant, Andrew Babcock (plus wife and son), is listed as living on New Providence Rd., most likely in the revolutionary era house below Paul’s house. This house was part of the Peckham family holdings, and I would guess that the Babcocks acquired it from the family around this time, when the family real estate was due to be split up between the family members, per WGP’s will. The Babcocks remained in the house until at least the 1970’s (they were our neighbors, but other then talking to each other while tending our mutual gardens, we didn’t see much of them.) Mr. Babcock was due to receive some money from WGP’s will if he was still working for him when WGP died. Not sure if this was the case, but it appears from the evidence he remained on good terms with the family. I have a hunch that he or his father had been in the employ of the Peckhams in Newport and was brought down to Westfield by WGP. Unfortunately, I do not recall us ever discussing the Peckhams with Mr. Babock or his wife the 30+ years we lived next to them. We have only recently become aware of his involvement in the surrounding property. Notes for JOHN PECKHAM JR: Mike, Thanks for writing; I'm glad the info's useful. I took a look at your Peckham page (FILE/0004text.txt) - you're Sam Peckham's grandson. Let me tell you how things fit. John H. Peckham Jr. in 1920 married Marian Carpenter, who was my Dad's mother's (Hazel Carpenter) sister. Ginnie, who married Dick Albert, is their daughter, so her line is John H. Jr., John H., not Jack, Charles, John H. Ginnie had a brother, Harry Thurston. I believe both of them were born in N. Attleboro; they certainly grew up there, among a bunch of their Carpenter cousins in Attleboro and N. Attleboro, my Dad included. Harry lived in N. Attleboro, and Ginnie spent much of her adult life on the Cape. Harry married first Bernice Marlow, who died in the 1960's, IIRC, and second, Geraldine X (I'm going to have to ask my Dad about her name); he had no children in either marriage. Both Ginnie and Harry have died. I don't have a likely SSDI entry for Ginnie (another thing to ask Dad) Last weekend my parents and I were at Mt. Hope Cemetery in N. Attleboro to look at the Carpenter plots, and passed the Peckham plot on the way out. Marian and John Jr. are buried there, as is their son Harry. My Dad says to my Mom, out of the blue, "Do you remember Harry's cousin Sam? He had a ranch out West - Rocking Horse Ranch, where Harry spent some time working. He was diabetic, and had some problems with it." She remembered Harry talking about him, but never met him; I'm not sure my Dad actually met him, either. Up until then I hadn't even heard of him, 3 days later I'm reading your e-mail - small world. I do have some more Peckham births from the N. Ray is desc from John Peckham Jr (s/o John Hathaway and Harriet) In further talk with my Dad, it turns out he had forgotten that John Jr. remarried after Marian died, and knew no more about his second wife. All I remember about her is that she was called "Dee." My own memories of John are fairly dim. I was young and met him only a couple times, and in those days I failed to write down everything I learned about my relatives, unfortunately. I do seem to recall that he was missing a finger, or half a one, which I assume happened in the jewelry shop. My Dad remembers your grandmother and Sam; they lived next door to Marian and John on Hunting St. in N.A. He also remembers that Sam's house in Pocasset got washed about a mile inland in the 1938 hurricane, and that John Sr. left his house by boat, from a second-story window. I hope some of this is news to you, but if not, I'd love to hear any more details you know of. I assume the "Brown School" you mentioned Sam attending was Moses Brown? My Dad thinks that by the time he was aware of it John Jr. was running the jewelry business, but that it had to close down in the Depression - is this more or less accurate? Ray Scanlon Letter from Larry Lincoln You asked if I could tell you anything about Sam Peckham. As I mentioned to your mother, he was 10 years older than I, so I didn't know him that well. Especially so, as I was only about 8 years old when he moved after his parents died, to live a few streets away with his aunt and uncle. I did ask my brother, Dick, what he could tell me about your grandfather, but he said it was so long ago that he couldn't remember much of those years. Sam was the same age as Bob, another brother of mine, and I believe they were closer, but unfortunately, that brother is no longer living. I seem to recall Bob reminiscing about those times, though, and I have the impression that your grandfather was a bit of a "cut-up" in his youth. Nothing serious, but maybe a little mischievous. I could be mistaken, though. I do remember that his parents had a huge cherry tree which the kids in the neighborhood used to climb into when the time was "ripe" for picking! They also had a cook - Flora, I believe her name was - who used to make some very tasty cookies! When I used to stop by to say "hello" to Flora ( if it was her day for baking cookies), I would go into the dining room so I could step on the button under the table, which Sam's parents used to summon the cook. Flora didn't appreciate me doing that, if I remember correctly. I wish I could tell you more about your grandfather when he lived there. As I recall, Sam's mother died quite young, from pneumonia, I think. I remember your grandmother and her sister, as well as their father, Ralph Harden, attending the Episcopal Church that we belonged to, but as my brother Dick would say, that was a long time ago! I didn't know any Springers, but the Bodinski brothers, Chet and Ed, were well-known in town as star athletes in high school. Child of SAMUEL PECKHAM and JEAN HARDEN is: 9. i.
