With the exception of four years, he resided in Rochester from 1836. When the "Rochester Union & Advertiser" was started, he became an employee and a member of the firm in 1864. (This newspaper was later merged with "The Times" and is now "The Times-Union".) In 1888, he retired from business. From 1856, he was a member of the Rochester Board of Education and its President in 1865-65; Vestryman of St. Luke's Church; member of the Ionic Lodge, F. & A.M.; Ionie Chapter and Cyrene Commandery. | Notes for Richard S. Kline: Son of Cornelius Henry Kline and Sarah Cushney, of John Kiline and Maria Hanson (all of Amsterdam, NY, or closeby), of the emigrant William Kline and Maria O'Reagen. William Kline came from Germany in 1767, married in 1769, and settled at Fort Stanwix (now Rome, NY). Because of the troubled conditions, he removed to German Flats (now Herkimer, NY), where in 1778, his second son, John, was born. He served in the Revolutionary War in Col. Peter Bellinger's regiment. About 1790, he settled near Fort Johnson, Montgomery Co, NY, on a tract of land "a mile square," where he passed the remainder of his life. At his grave on this old farm, his granddaughter, Susan Kline Whitman, erected in 1936, a bronze tablet on a huge boulder to this memory. (Stukely Westcott, Vol. 2, Pgs. 353-354, 1939) |
