Notes for John Columbus Brittain:
GOODSPEED PUBLICATION DUBOIS COUNTY, INDIANA 1885 BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES 1885 PAGE 703.

JOHN C. BRITTAIN, farmer, was born in Dubois County, Indiana, May 1, 1831, son of John G. and Sarah Lindsey Brittain. The father was born in South Carolina in 1796, and the mother born in Tennessee in 1808. John was a farmer and carpenter and came to this State about 1823, locating near Hayesville, where he died in August 1853. The mother is still living, aged seventy-seven years.

Our subject received but little education but by taking an active part in business life he acquired a good practical education. At the age of twenty he began working for himself and soon saved enough to purchase forty acres of timberland. This he cleared and then erected a log home. He now owns 214 acres of land, 150 acres being under cultivation. October 20, 1854, he married Rachel Cooper, born in 1837, daughter of William B. and Mary Ferre Cooper. They are the parents of twelve children: Mary J., Elbridge E., Abraham L., Rachel L., Ulysses H., George R., Clara V., Estella B., John C., James A. and two unnamed. Mrs. Brittain is a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Mr. Brittain is a Republication and a good example of self-made man. Starting from a hired laborer, he has risen step by step until he has acquired a comfortable competency.

      179. William Jackson6 Brown (Nancy5 Brittain, William Brittain4 Jr, William3 Brittain, Samuel2, Unknown1) was born August 07, 1829 in Dubois County, Indiana, and died January 30, 1909 in Alfordsville (Daviess Co) Indiana Old Union Cemetery. He married (1) Nancy Ann Raney September 01, 1856 in Daviess County, Indiana. She was born February 28, 1839, and died December 15, 1878 in Alfordsville (Daviess Co) Indiana Old Union Cemetery. He married (2) Margaret Taylor July 28, 1881 in Daviess County, Indiana, daughter of James Watt and Clarissa McCain. She was born December 01, 1838 in Jefferson County, Ohio, and died July 31, 1911 in Alfordsville (Daviess Co) Indiana Oak Grove Cemetery.

Notes for William Jackson Brown:

William Jackson was probably named after David G Brown's father. No proof on this. We believe he is referred to in History of Dubois County: A "College" in the wilderness of Dubois County, 1837. In the old log schoolhouse such men as the Hon. Goodlet Morgan, Supreme Judge Wm. E. Niblack (surveyor, lawyer, congressman, judge), Wm. B. Sherritt, Joseph Stubblefield, William Brown, the Hortons, Kelsoes, Brittains and Haddocks attended school. William Brown would have been eight years old in 1837. On page 611, William Brown is described as "The latter was among the best man I have ever known. None knew him but to love him. None named him but to praise."

On the 1850 census, William Brown, age 21, was listed as a laborer in the household of Ashbury Alexander age 36, wife Nancy Armstrong "nee". Children Charlotte age 3, Isaac age 1. No doubt this was William Jackson Brown living and working as his livelihood, on this farm.

New evidence submitted by Cindy Thompson (Keith@dmrtc.net) Daviees County, Indiana Look Up Volunteer, May 1999: William J. Brown is found in Daviess Co Indiana, just across the White River from Dubois Co on the 1860 census. He lived a long life, had two wives and left six sons and four daughters at the time of his death in 1909. Rosemary Stewart, Dubois Co Court House Historian, pointed to a William J. Brown on 1860 Daviess/Reeve twp, Indiana census. Cindy took this information and developed all of the family history which is included here on William Jackson Brown, except the burial location for Nancy A. Brown, 1st wife of William J. Brown. This was supplied by Sandi (moose128@juno.com)Sandra E. Johnston, look up person on Cemeteries, Daviess Co, Indiana. Both of these connections made through USGENWEB genealogy site. As we look over the family history submitted by Cindy Thompson, Washington, IN, we see that William Jackson Brown left a very large group of descendants. Expect to find some of them still in Daviess Co IN.

As you can see the earliest purchase was in 1857, that's when he must have come up from Dubois County.
I thought it odd that he purchased the first land & Nancy purchased the land in 2 transactions for different amounts. Hope this helps you out.
Cindy

Following taken from Washington, Indiana Herald, February 2, 1909: "FORMER TRUSTEE IS DEAD - William Jackson Brown, a substantial and prominent citizen of Reeve Township died Saturday morning about 8 o'clock at his home near Alfordsville. His death being mainly from old age. He was buried Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock in Old Union Cemetery.

Mr Brown, who was born in Dubois Co, near Hayesville, seventy eight years ago was a former trustee of Reeve Township and was one of the best known men in that community. He was twice married and reared a large and thrifty family of children, who are among the best citizens of Daviess County. He moved to Reeve township when a young man where he continued to live the rest of his life, being a stock dealer, farmer, and fur buyer. In politics, he was an ardent democrat. He is survived by the widow, whose maiden name was Margaret Taylor, four daughters, and six sons. His first wife died about eighteen years ago."

His marriage to Nancy Raney, September 1, 1856, is found in Daviess Co, Indiana Book 1 Page 493. License date 26 August 1856, recorded by John Van Trees 20 September, 1856, married by Wm. Madden Justice of the Peace 1 September 1856. Witness William J. Brown.

His marriage to Margaret Taylor, July 28, 1881, is found in Daviess Co, Indiana Book 5 Page 241. License date 27 July 1881, Clerk Joseph Wilson recorded 30 July 1881, married by H. Head, Minister 28 July 1881.

Death Records: Recorded Book H-20, Page #29, Listing #256. Cause of death: La Gripp, duration 1 week & senility 2-3 years. Attending Physician Calvin L. Rowland, Alfordsville, IN. Age 79 years 5 months, 23 days. Gives his father's name correctly as David G. Brown and his father's place of birth as North Carolina. This contradicts census information of 1830 & 1840 Dubois Co, IN. as Kentucky being place of birth for David G. Brown? Gives his mother's name as Brittain and her place of birth as North Carolina, which is correct.

Notes for Margaret Taylor:
Cindy reported, "I found a Sadie A listed on the 1910 census living with her widowed mother & her brother or half brother Miram. I assume she is daughter #4." On 1910 Census, Margaret shown as head of household, widowed, had 6 children, 5 living. step-son Hiran G, age 40 & daughter Sadie A, age 25. This daughter born in 1885 would have been hers and William J. Brown. Were some of her other children from a previous marriage?

Death Record: Reeve Twp Book H-20 Page 60, listing #766. Cause of death: general disability from Typhoid fever. Attending Physician: T.H. Hedrick, MD, Alfordsville, IN.

WASHINGTON DEMOCRAT, FRIDAY 2 APR 1926
O.L. BROWN FOUND DEAD IN BARN LOT
Suffered a Heart Attack While on Way to Barn to Milk.
O.L. Brown, residing with his brother, Louis, southwest of Alfordsville, was found dead about 6:30 Thursday evening in the barn lot.
He had been ill of influenza, but had recovered sufficiently to be up and about. Thursday evening he started for the barn to milk the cows, and when he failed to return to the house after a reasonable length of time, his brother, Louis went to investigate and found Mr. Brown's body in the barn lot, where he had fallen following a heart attack. He had been a sufferer from heart disease for some time, and it's believed influenza had further aggravated his ailment.
He was 61 years old, and was never married. He was born in Reeve township and had resided there all his life. He leaves four brothers and three sisters, Louis, D.O., and Hiram all of Reeve township, and William T. Brown, of Bement, Mich., Mrs. Samuel Patrick and Mrs. Will Kelso, of Reeve township and Mrs. J. Sada Brown married Harry E. McCord 15 May 1910, gives her mother's name as Margaret Watt which means her mother Margaret Taylor Brown must have remarried after William J. Brown's death, January 30, 1909. She gives her mother's current address as Reeve Twp. Daviess County.
