Notes for William III De Lanvallei, Surety Baron, Sir: WILLIAM de LANVALLEI, the Surety, was governor of Colchester Castle in 1215-16, when he joined with the insurgent Barons. They constituted him one of the twenty-five Sureties to govern the kingdom, and he was likewise a party to that covenant which yielded to them the city and Tower of London. He appears to have been reconciled to Henry III at the great treaty in 1217, but there are no further par-ticulars extant concerning him. In 1212, Alan Basset of Wycombe, in Bucks, father of Philip Basset, Chief Justice of England, who is named in Magna Charta as one of the king's liegemen, gave the king two hundred marks and 'an excellent palfrey' that his daughter Hawise might be married to William de Lanvallei. He died in 1217. They had an only daughter, Hawise. |
