August 30, AD 1872, Thomas Downey aged 47 was drowned by accidentally falling out of a boat just in front of this Church of St. Ann's. His remains were discovered and as he had previously performed his Easter duties was interred in concerated ground in the Cemetery of St. Ann's by Thomas Sears.

Elizabeth Downey, (Aunt Betty) as she was more often called,[ as told by Gary's Aunt Vera Bruce]...Hugh's first wife.... was in Sydney, N.S. taking care of Murray's first wife and children. It is thought that his first wife was ill and needed care so Aunt Betty was hired to care for her and the children. After she died Aunt Betty wanted to marry Murray, he being a Protestant, the R.C. church were very much against the union but by much persuasion by Aunt Betty the Priest of the time relented and ordered the special dispensation necessary for them to be married.
