Fanny Dyke left her home in Bonavista at an early age, her mom died when she was 11 years old. Her dad Henry was remarried 11 months later to Susan Randall. Fanny then moved in with her Uncle John and his wife Jane. They had four children, Susannah, (1884) Ralph (1885) Annie (1888) and Maud (1890). Fanny helped to care for the children and later at the age of 14 years moved into St. John's as a housekeeper for the Ayre family. She had two brothers George and Richard who were 22 and 20 when their dad remarried. The both died within a year of each other at ages 22 1/2 and 21 years. George died on October 07, 1896, 7 months after Henry (father) remarried and Richard died October 11, 1897 just one year later. She also had a brother Thomas who died at 1 yr. and a sister Maria who died at 5 yrs. She always told her children that she had no brothers and sisters???? EDNA A HEATH

TWIN FALLS ID 83301

(208)734-9048

I called Edna Heath.... unfortunately she is 82 years old, has Alzheimers and is hard of hearing so I did not get to speak with her.....but I did speak with her daughter Linda Elder...she was Uncle Gus' step-daughter. She told me a bit of history on our uncle.

He had only been married to Edna for about 5 years. Prior to that he lived with a lady named Virginia (Jenny) Bell, for more than 20 years. They had both worked on a Cruise Line, she as a hairdresser and he worked with the ships paper. As far as she knew they had no children together. When they retired the went to Twin Fall's Idaho. The both enjoyed gambling very much and as a result of that they lost quite a bit of what they had. Jenny had a daughter Doanda (Stapleton) who thought the world of Uncle Gus ....Bill as he was called by them. Linda told me that Doanda would be the best person to talk with about Uncle Gus....she had been living in Jackpot, Idaho, but has since moved to St. Louis, Missouri or somewhere around there. She workes in the "Gaming" industy.....casino's, etc. as did Linda and that is where Linda met uncle Gus. After Jenny died Linda said she introduced uncle Gus to her mom and shortly there after they were married. She said the Uncle Gus did not gamble much in his later years.

She knew of Gus's daughter Hope and had spoken with her a few times on the phone....she told me that she knew uncle Gus was in the US Navy as she found his papers when she was going through his personal effects after he died. She sent all that they had..... papers, photographs etc. to his daughter Hope. I asked her if she know what uncle Gus died of and she said to the best of her knowledge it was just old age. He had not been sick.

And that is the story on our uncle Gus as I have been able to find out. Some of the story I got from Aunt Ruby......above, fits in to the story told to me by Linda....just the sequence of events may be slightly different..

Notes for GORDON NOEL DAWE:

Dad's father died when he was just 12 years old, his mother had to raise 6 children on her own. She did so with a great deal of help from her family, as each of the children took turns living with an aunt or uncle in St. John's and Harbour Grace SS until they were old enough to get work and help out. Dad spent a great deal of his childhood with his Aunt Elsie and Uncle Dick George in Harbour Grace SS and went to school there for many years. When he was 14 he got a job pushing a "hand cart" down Water Street, carrying merchandise for the merchants of Water St.

When he got married he was a shoe salesman for Parker & Monroe and traveled the Island from St. John's to Port aux Basque selling merchandise to various shoe stores along the way.

During World War II dad and Uncle Alex worked as wardens for the "Black Out."

They would walk around at night making sure that everyone had their lights out because during air raids any area with lights visible could be bombed. The wardens were headed at the time by Sir Leonard Outerbridge.

Dad worked as a salesman for Parker & Monroe Co. in St. John's for many years and he traveled the Island selling footwear to stores in other communities.

In the Fall of 1955 dad accepted a job with Mr. Leo Kaplow to manage a clothing store in Stephenville. So after Christmas 1956 we all moved to Stephenville an moved into a house on St. Georges Ave.

The bride wore a rose colored suit and the groom wore navy. A reception was held at Sterlings Restaurant on Water St. in St. John's.

When mom and dad were first married they lived at 85 Pleasant Street. It was a three story house with each floor being a separate apt. Mom and dad lived on the top floor for several years. They were only able to get married if dad made $7.00 a week, so he had to go to his boss and ask for a raise in order for them to get married. He worked at Parker & Monroe at the time.

Aunt Phyllis (dad's sister) and Uncle Alex lived in the second floor apt. and a Simms family lived in the bottom apt. Mr. Simms worked with dad at Parkers.
