1536. William Burritt, born Abt. 1615 in Wales; died Abt. 1650 in Stratford, (Fairfield County) Connecticut. He married 1537. Elizabeth Jones Abt. 1640 in unknown.

1537. Elizabeth Jones, born Abt. 1620 in Wales; died 1681 in Stratford.

Notes for William Burritt:

Birth: 1610-15 in Wales by tradition
(parentage unknown

Marriage:
1637 to Elizabeth Jones probably in Wales (estimate based on birth of first known child).

Wife has been called Elizabeth Jones by one genealogy compiler (Virkus) but the source and proof of this naming is not given.

Death:
1650 (Undated inventory of estate is second listed in first town records of Stratford following an entry dated 2/16/1650)

TTHEORY:
William Burritt seems to have some relationship with the Hawley family, and may have been a servant of Joseph Hawley who was aearly resident of New Haven along with his brother-in-law Moses Wheeler . About 1648 they relocated to Stratford where they had other family. This was after Moses was publicly ridiculed and banished from New Haven for kissing his wife in public on a Sunday. Joseph Hawley was a well educated man from London, and became Stratford's first town recorder. Among his first entries is the death of William Burritt. Joseph Hawley then took in William Burritt's eldest son Stephen, about ten at the time, and educated him to be his successor. This suggests some familial relationship and/or loyalty, It may be that William Burritt was Joseph Hawley's servant, apprentice, or poor relative. No record of a William Burritt outside of Stratford has been found, suggesting he was a man of meagre means, and not a land or property owner.

Origins unknown, but one unproven family tradition says he came from Glamorganshire, Wales. The name was originally Baret, of French extraction, but because of Welsh spech got tranliterated into Burritt.

Listed among residents of Stratford, Ct in 1650, but dead by 1651, leaving widow, Elizabeth, and two sons, STEPHEN and John, and a daughter Mary who is said to have married a Smith. This could have been Noah Smith, son of Henry Smith of Wethersfield. No other Smith family appears to have any close association with the early settlers of Stratford , and little is known of Henry Smith's son Noah, other than he appears to have died as a young man. There also appears to be no further record of Mary Burritt Smith, and she too may have died young. John Burritt had only one son Joseph. Most of the Burritt's are therefore descended from one of the six sons of Stephen.

William Burritt is thought to be the ancestor of all the Burritts in the USA and Canada.
