* The Descendants of Benjamin K. Bryant and Atlantic O. Jordan*

Updated March 18, 2012

I am researching descendants of Benjamin K.Bryant and Atlantic Ocean Jordon.

Benjamin K. Bryant came from Franklin County,Georgia. Several family trees, on the web, have Royal Bryan/Bryant as Benjamin's father. I have recently seen a will of Royal David Bryan that list Benjamin K. Bryan as a heir. Royal left Benjamin one dollar in his will. This may be the reason for the name change.

Benjamin married Atlantic Ocean Jordon in Franklin County, Georgia, in 1841. I found their marriage record using a web search. It was easy to track Atlantic because of her unusual name. The marriage record had a Benjamin K. Bryan (not Bryant) married to Atlantic Ocean Jordan Feb 21, 1841. It is believed that Benjamin changed his name to Bryant when he came to Alabama. Why? I do not know.

Based on the chronology of births, Benjamin and Atlantic must have moved to Alabama between 1841 and 1846. If Josie was born in Alabama as reported in "The Heritage of Morgan County Alabama Vol. 54",p.166 then Benjamin and Atlantic may have been in Alabama as early as 1840. The only land record found was one land purchased in 1875, for 79 Ac. in Morgan County, Alabama.

The 1850 Census shows Benjamin to be age 37 and Atlantic to be age 38. When the 1850 Census was taken, they were living in Marshall County, Alabama, Census District 22. It is unknown if they owned land in Marshall County. At the time of the census, 5 children were at home: Asberry(Asbury) age 16, Joanna age 14, Melissia age 3, Alpha age 10 months and a Jim R. age 6. This is the first time Jim R's name has come up as a possible offspring of Benjamin and Atlantic. Jim R. does not appear on further census.

I do not know if Benjamin was Asberry Bryant's father. Based on the 1850 census, Asberry was 16 years old. This means in 1841 when Benjamin and Atlantic were Married, Asberry would have been 6 years old. Asberry had other siblings' borne before Benjamin and Atlantic were married. The 1840 Census in Franklin County GA. shows Atlantic O Jordan being the head of household with three children at home (two boys and one girl).

The 1870 Census shows Benjamin to be 60 and Atlantic to be 58. It also has Benjamin C. age 18 and Malicy age 25 listed as insane. Malicy is probably Melissa. The 1870 Census has a 3-year-old boy named Albert at Benjamin's house. I do not think this Albert was Benjamin K.'s and Atlantic's child. She would have been 55 years old when the child was borne. The child may been Asberry's son. On the same census Asberry has a 6-year- old boy named Albert.

The 1880 Census shows only Malissa age 34 and Benjamin C. age 38 living with Benjamin and Atlantic. Albert was not listed. In 1880, Benjamin was 70 and Atlantic was 68. I have found no further information about Benjamin or Atlantic after 1880. One descendant thinks both are buried at the Pleasant View Cemetery in Morgan County, Alabama. I do not know what happened to Benjamin C. or Melissa. I do not know what happened to Benjamin's land when he died.

Childern of Benjamin Bryant and Atlantic are:
i. Thomas Freeman Bryant, b.1833 in Georgia
ii. Asberry Banks Bryant, b. 1835 in Georgia
iii. Joanna Josie Bryant, b. Jan. 31, 1836 in Georgia or Alabama
iv. William Bryant, b. 1841 in Georgia
v. Melissa A. Bryant, b. 1846 in Alabama
vi. Alpha Melinda Bryant b. July 19,1849 in Alabama
vii. Benjamin C. Bryant b. 1852 in Alabama
