Notes for CAPTAIN JONATHAN BUZZARD:
Capt. Jonathan Buzzard served in the Black Hawk War of 1832. Soon after he and his family joined other pioneers to go westward into a new land. They floated down the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers on homemade flatboats, then made their way overland to Arkansas and finally to Missouri. They reached this area about 1833, bringing a few household goods and implements with them. Among the group were Andrew Sparlin and his wife Elizabeth Spurgeon Sparlin. They homesteader land near Wela Park, the farm now owned by Mrs. Phil Bushner. They built their cabin about where the present house stands. Abraham Spurgeon and his wife Nancy, located near the present site of Spurgeon.
Capt Jonathan Buzzard, with six children, homesteader land just east of Wela Park and built a cabin south of the house formerly owned by Jack Buzzard. Part of this old homestead still remains in the Buzzard Family.
The original cabin had two rooms with a breezeway between and was the first plastered cabin in this part of the country. It was burned during the Civil War and a new one was built after the war ended. In later years this cabin was moved upon the hill east of the present house and remains there today, more than 100 years old.
Capt Jonathan's wife died before leaving Ohio or soon after reaching Missouri. All the children were born in Pennsylvania.
Capt Jonathan died before the Civil War. He wasn't buried in the Buzzard Cemetery on the former Jack Buzzard farm. the first Buzzard in Newton County was buried in the little family cemetery on the old Fred Gallemore farm, Now owned by Dean Cox, east of Seneca. Only a pointed stone, with no inscription marks the spot.
