1. JOHN² BURROUGHS (JOHN¹)^1,² was born 1651 in ENGLAND ³, and died 25 May 1693 in Enfield, Hampshire, Hartford, MA. He married HANNAH^3,⁴ 1679 in Enfield, Hampshire, Hartford, MA ⁵. She was born 1658, and died 08 Sep 1729 in Enfield, Hamshire, Hartford, MA⁵.

Notes for JOHN BURROUGHS:
**CORRECTION" Previously we had info that John BURROUGHS born 1651 in England and died 1693 in Enfield, CT., was the son of Jeremiah BURROUGHS of Scituate, MASS. THIS IS NOT SO.....and has been factually proven many times....mostly be the fact that Jeremiah's son Jon died at the age of abt 20, unmarried, and is documented in church records....,,,,,per Victor BURROUGHS research.

Also, Jerilyn MARSHALL states...
another piece of documentation that John the son of Jeremiah BURROUGHS died in his 20's. In the 1915 periodical "The Mayflower Descendant" published some info of Jeremiah's family. It includes a transcript of the inventory and settlement of the estate of John BURROUGHS, son of Jeremiah. The estate was divided between John's father and sisters. John estate was settled 7 July 1676, so he was not John of Enfield. Citation to article: Bowman, George Ernest, "Burrowes-Tinkman Note" Mayflower Descendant Vol. 17, 1915, pp. 186-7.

(2) Per Ancestors of Edgar Rice BURROUGHS-(Created 10 Sept 1998 with FAMILY ORIGINS 5.0 from Parsons Technology/WEB SITE-ERB Ring) John's parents were Jeremiah BURROUGHS & Hannah HEWES/HEWETT mar 1 May 1651 in Scitute, MASS. This theory (2) is NOT correct, as Jeremiah & Hannah's son John died at an early age, unmarried. This family WAS NOT at Enfield, CT. This has been proven many times by BURROUGHS researchers.

*Have copy of the last will of John BURROUGHS, late of Enfield in Hampshire, deceased, in the year one thousand six hundred and ninety one...1691, and presented 2 of September, 1693, before (John Pyncion, Esqr., and Samuel Partrigg, Register) at Springfield.

*Per Victor BURROUGHS-Longtime BURROUGHS Researcher-"The first BURROUGHS to arrive in America from our line is JOHN BURROUGHS. The last name has been spelled like this through 13 generations here in America. John was born in 1651 or 1652 in England, From what I can find his most likely origin would be the South West part of England, the Counties of Gloustershire, Sommerstshire, Wiltshire and Hampshire. There is a record of the BURROUGHS family in the researchy book "ENGLISH SURNAMES IN 1601", in the Winchester Cathederal, Also another text suggests that Laverstock, Witshire was a popular BURROUGHS home.
John was a Puritan. The first record of him in America was dated 1680 in the town of Enfield, MA. He is listed as one of the three men that built the Congregational church in Enfield. The records still exist today with the church. Being in Enfield suggests that he most likely sailed to Salem, MA from England as Enfield is an out colony of Salem through Springfield, MA. He worked as a famer in Enfield having received a lot in the second distribution in 1681. I have not found any evidence of any brothers or sisters of John in America. This suggests to me that he came along or possibly with a yound bride. His wife's name was Hannah and she was born in 1658. I don't know where she was born nor if they came together from England. My best guess would be that he left England between 1667 and 1679. If you figure that he had to work off his indentures to the shipping concern, the dates would tighten to 1667-1673 allowing six years to pay for his passage before arriving in Enfield. John had four children, their names by birth order were Hannah, Rebecca, John and Sarah. If we apply English naming traditions this would imply that John's father was JOHN BURROUGHS and his mothers name would be REBECCA..........."

*John BURROUGHS-1685-was often referred to as 'Ensign' John.

*Have copy of Last will of Ensign John BURROUGHS of Windsor, in the county of Hartford and colony of Conn. in New England. In this he left mention of leaving to his sons (also) one acre ofland that the saw mill stands on, named BURROUGHS MILL. This is something to look for.

*Per Steve Warling-along with the wills of John of Enfield and John (Ensign)- states that John Ensign BURROUGHS, 3rd born in Enfield, Mass, married Sarah (Tyler)?? In fact, he married Sarah Rumril, and HIS son John, born 1711, married Sarah TYLER. Some descrepancies in our records show John's family as:
