Notes for W
ILLIAM BUCKLEY:
In 1805, William became the preacher of the Glen's Creek Baptist Church in Woodford County, Kentucky. Church records show he was there until 1813. There were a couple of years during this time that he left with others for some reason. He possibly appears in the 1810 census in Shelby County, Kentucky. Records show that he left over the issue of slavery. The church was opposed to it, while he was for it. After he left, records show that Jeremiah Buckley and Samuel Buckley joined the church along with their families. Unknown if these are William's brothers. In 1816, William was at the Corn Creek Church in Trimble County, Kentucky. There is mention of him as well in other churches in the area. According to the book, "History of Kentucky Baptists", he possessed good effective preaching gifts, and a great revival broke out under his ministry during the years of 1818-1819. The book states, "As a preacher he gave much satisfaction to his hearers. But as a man he was indolent and improvident, and consequently always very poor. Supplying the necessities of such a man, as the brethren had to supply those of Mr. Buckley, is always an aggravation, even to the most liberal. This speedily rendered him unpopular and involved the necessity of his moving from place to place, even to his old age. He was finally silenced from preaching for drunkenness." In 1820, he was at the Old Salem Missionary Church in Livingston County, Kentucky. Then in 1821-1830 he is found performing a number of marriages in Caldwell County, Kentucky. In 1835, he was at the New Hope Church in Lick Creek, Madisonville, Hopkins County, Kentucky. It was about this time that his son, John L. Buckley, married Elizabeth Ezell.
