Denmark Family history, general notes

§         In Denmark the political geography of the country was traditionally divided up by amt (county) then herred (district)  then sogn (parish or city). Sometimes a person would even be identified by the name of the farm where they lived and worked (like Ostergaard).

§         All males were registered for military service, at one point from birth then later from age 12 and then age 16. Good place to find information on males, especially if they moved and to where.

§         The modern spelling for “aa” is “å” as in “Ålborg”.
