Notes for Matilda Anna Tschudin:
Crocheting family ties
93-year-young Tillie Oltmanns gives each family member a special gift
Tillie Oltmanns has been crocheting since her mother taught her as
a child growing up west of Belgrade. Now, at 93 years young, she has
made more place mats, doilies, afghans and bedspreads than she can
count.
She also passed the tradition on to two daughter-in-laws and a
grandson when she taught them to crochet, although they have a lot of
crocheting to do to catch up with their mentor.
Tillie has crocheted afghans for each of her four children, ten
grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
It takes three weeks to make an afghan, working a little each day.
And, she never needs to read directions. She simply looks at a picture of
a pattern.
Her spritely personality and talent has captured the attention of the
nurses at the Litzenberg Long Term Care Center in Central City where she
temporarily makes her home.
"All the nurses want me to make them an afghan," laughs Tillie with
a sweetly pursed smile."But I just don’t have time to make that many."
She has also crocheted a bedspread for each one of her children and
grandchildren.
The bedspreads requires 99 squares and it takes a day’s work to
crochet one square.
Son and daughter-in-law Larry and Barbara Oltmanns of North
Platte visit their mother at least once a month, since they live the closest.
They keep her supplied with crocheting supplies with each visit.
"If I have one finished, they get me another batch (of yarn)," says
Tillie."I let them pick out the colors.Right now I’m making a ‘crazy
afghan’ using up all the leftover yarn."
The son and mother duo also enjoy playing Tillie’s favorite games,
like Upwards and Kings Corner, in between her other choice pastime of
crossword puzzles. Her eyesight and memory are as "sharp as a tack,"
reminds Larry.
The family is eagerly looking foward to a reunion this summer when
grandchildren will be arriving in Nebraska from coast to coast. It’s then
Tillie will present all 17 grandchildren--and one on the way--with an
afghan.
"I’m not sure just what colors to give to who," says Tillie."So
maybe we’ll just hand them out and they can trade if they want to,"
although they may find it difficult to pick between the cozy mauves,
tempting blues and inviting yellows, just to mention a few.
One thing is certain, there will be more afghans, as Tillie remarks, "I
don’t know what I would do if I just had to sit there."
