These pages are dedicated to my ancestors for being smart enough to allow me to be here. To those of you who stumble onto this information I bid you welcome on your genealogical journey. The Burkhoff family immigrated from the Brest-Litovsk area of Belarus to NYC around 1890. My g-grandfather Michael Berezofsky (Berezovsky) was a founder of the Brisker Benevolent Society in New York, NY. Harry, my great uncle was responsible for "adjusting" the family name sometime around 1908, when he fought with the Queens Army in Belarus. The root of the Berezofsky name is bereza (bjrjoza), it means birch (tree). The Barmatz family also immigrated from Brest-Litovsk area to NYC around 1890 after arriving in Belarus from Terespol, Austria around 1804. The name is a truncation of the Hebrew Bar Marah Tzadik, meaning "Son of a righteous civilian judge". Barmatz was my paternal great-grandmother's maiden name. The Nagor and Abuhoff names are from my maternal line. The families immigrated from around the city of Gomel in Belarus to NYC around 1900. The Abuhoff name appears to originate in Morocco in the fifteenth century and reappears in Sephardic Spain during the sixteenth century, where Rabii Yitzhak Abuhav wrote a book, called "Menoras Hamoar" or in English "The Holder of Light". The Nagor name may be a derivation of the Spanish name Najar. I am also researching the Hartman's and Shapiro's from Tokaj, Hungary(paternal line); and the Zissman and Greenberg names from Mogilev, Belarus (maternal line). Shapiro was my paternal G-grandmother's maiden name and I was told by my father we were somehow related to the Shapiro Kosher Wine folks from New York City. However, after contacting Shapiro Wine this seems somewhat unlikely. These pages list all individuals in my database. I have consciously excluded birth date to protect my living relatives. Please e-mail me at ARNB@ARNBXYZ.ORG (remove XYZ) if you have a possible match and we can trade information. |
