Notes for JACQUES RENE GANYARD: About the close of the American War, Peter received a lette from his brother James' wife, that his brother had died with yellow fever, which was raging to an alarming degree, and she was now ready to start for France. She had left the business in the hands of a Mr Tourden, by whom he would receive a present (his brother had no living children). On arriving at the island, he found everything in a most depressed condition. The whites were mostly dead or gone away. The slaves were taking great liberties. His stay was short. He received three thousand dollars in gold, together with his brother's wearing apparel, thrown into a trunk in a most confused manner, even the saliva cloths used about the mouth of the sick, unwashed as they were used.
