The Newby family - Ten generations of Friends....
Until recently the earliest known ancestor of the Newby family of
Perquimans Precinct, North Carolina was William Newby who was associated
with Chuckatuck Monthly Meeting of the Society of Friends in Nansemond
County, Virginia as early as May, 1683. In 1962 William Perry Johnson,
genealogist of Raleigh, North Carolina, prepared a manuscript entitled, The
Newbys of England and Ireland. He pointed out that the Newbys lived in
County Northumberland, England (which county lay along the border between
Scotland and England), and in County Durham, England, which adjoined
Northumberland on the south. He also pointed out that at least some of them
were associated with the Friends Meeting in Dublin, Ire-land in the years
following 1662. [1] While Mr. Johnson collected an imposing quantity of
Newby family information and even suggested that William Newby of
Chuckatuck and Perquimans Monthly Meetings in Virginia and North Carolina
might be a son of Ralph and Dorothy Newby of England and Ireland, he stated
clearly that he had not proved the relation-ships.
Recently Mr. Larry Bell of Fairview Heights, Illinois, working with
professional genealogists in both Ireland and England, has been able to
obtain copies of additional Quaker and other church records which clearly
identify William Newby as the son of Ralph and Dorothy Newby and the
grandson of William Newby who was born in Northumberland County, England
before 1592.
Children of William Newby are:
i. | John Newby, died Unknown. |
Notes for John Newby: While no baptismal record was found, later information suggests strongly that Ralph Newby had a brother, John Newby. In addition to the William Newby family which arrived in Virginia and North Carolina in the 1680's, there was also a John Newby family. William and John Newby appear to have been related, but not as father and son or as brothers. |
