He crossed the Atlantic on the San Josef, and arrived in New Orleans in late 1778. In mid-January, 1779, under the command of Col. Don Francisco Bouligny, they left New Orleans with sixty Spaniards to establish a Spanish settlement on the Bayou Teche. On Feb. 7, 1779, the group founded New Iberia, Louisiana. Joseph Nicolas Benedicte Romero was 14 year old at the time. He is listed in the 1792 General Census of the Malaguenos Established at New Iberia.
