Notes for Jacob Friedley:
Rita Millis Notes:
The Descendants of Jacob Friedley and Elizabeth Moyer, manuscript by Ann C. Armstrong, 607 Gradview Dr., Bloomington, IN 47401 (in March 1979)
Jacob Friedley was born near Greensburg in Westmoreland Co., PA of Pennsylvania Dutch (German) descent. His wife was born near the village of Moyer in Favette Co., PA. They were married in Pennsylvania and must have lived in Lancaster Co., where their oldest son is said to have been born, before moving in the late 1700's to the present site of Newport, KY. They stayed there only about a year because of the prevalence of "milk sickness" and relocated to the Ohio River about two miles above Newpoert. They lived there about 4 years before moving (sometime prior to August 1800) to Jefferson Co., KY about 17 miles east of present day Louisville. (There is a possibility that the family lived in Bullit Co., KY; the 1800 special census of Kentucky lists Jacob and Elizabeth Friddle in Bullit Co. on 8/30/1800 as well as Jacob Fridley in Jefferson Co. on 9/3/1800.) Jacob and Elizabeth Friedley moved in 1807 or 1808 to Harrison Co. IN because, according to a letter by their grandson Henry, they disapproved of slavery. They died in Harrison Co., and are buried on Friedley Hill, loacated on the Lafe LaDuke farm on Hwy. 11. The old Friedley homestead is the first house beyond the Seventh Day Adventist Church in the direction of Corydon.
(Note: a record submitted to the Indiana Pioneer Society in 1958 by Clarence A Dryden states that beginning on 5/27/1776 Jacob Friedley served as captain in the 4th battalion of Lancaster Co., PA., under Col. James Burd and makes referance to the "Returns" in the Pennsylvania Archives, 2nd series, Vol. 13, p. 314 (edition of 1887). However, the reference here is to Jacob Fridley, for whom a entirely different line of descendants is given in DAR lineage Book 3, p. 182. It is doubtfull, therefore, that Jacob Friedley and the Jacob Fridley who served under Col. Burd are the same person.
