This site contains the ever growing family tree of our BURTON family. My research to date has determined that we originate from the County of Essex, England (in what is now considered the east end of London). The Canadian and US branches of the family descend from a small group of four BURTONs who emigrated in the early 1800s to the Township of Scarborough, in the Home District of Upper Canada (now a suburb of Toronto, Ontario, Canada).
Joseph BURTON the Elder, a Plumber and Glazier from Romford in the County of Essex, England, was the first to bring his family to settle in Upper Canada in 1818. Once Joseph was established, his nephew William BURTON and two neices Sarah Spearing Burton GOSTICK and Elizabeth Burton VINCENT, and their families, emigrated to the Townships of Scarborough, Pickering and East Zorra respectively in 1832. William, Sarah and Elizabeth were siblings, the children of Joseph's older brother John BURTON, a cooper from Stratford, Essex. I descend from William BURTON.
The genealogy presented in the reports at the bottom of this web page includes all the information I have been able to find so far about the descendants of each family mentioned above, as well as their ancestors, and branch lines who remained in England. I have been as meticulous as possible to include detailed sources, and I have been particularly brutal in not including anyone for whom I do not have conclusive evidence of a connection.
I have included some photos and document images to add meat to the bones of this genealogy, but I ask you to note that the automated uploading capability of this web site does not permit photos to remain in the order in which they were uploaded. I have numbered them sequentially to make it a bit easier to view them in chronological order. Additionally, because of privacy rules, details of all living individals have had to be "privatized".
***SPECIAL THANKS***
During my research, I have discovered several "long lost cousins" in various parts of the world who have each contributed their research to this effort. They include:
a. Frank CHURCHLEY of Victoria, British Columbia, my 3rd cousin once removed, who contributed his work on the descendants of Ann BURTON and William LAW;
b. Carol CARPENTER CULBERTSON of Evanville, Wisconsin, my 4th cousin once removed, who contributed her work on the descendants of William BURTON Jr. and Margaret BROWN, John BURTON and Anna ROWLAND, and Martha BURTON and Richard HAWKEY in the time period after those families migrated to the United States; c. Dr. James BURTON of Bothell, Washington, my 4th cousin once removed, who contributed his own descendant line from William BURTON Jr. and Margaret BROWN;
e. Sally BOMBARDO and Jack BURTON of Michigan, who are also distant relations, and who contributed research on some of the descendants of Joseph BURTON the Elder; and
f. Howard BURTON of Toronto, Ontario, my 6th cousin, who recently communicated with me and who descends from Joseph BURTON.
