Valentine J. Metz Contractor, dies

Stricken in an Office
Valentine J. Metz, prominent contractor of this city, died yesterday from a stroke of apoplexy suffered Wednesday, Mr. Metz, who was sixty-two years old, was senior partner of W. J. Metz & Son, No. 37 East North Street.
Mr. Metz was stricken Wednesday morning while in the office of Robert A. Wallace, architect, in the Mutual Life building. His son and partner, Carl Metz, had stepped out to transact some business and Mr. Metz was waiting his return when the attack came. He soon became unconscious and did not awaken. His son-in-law, Dr. William B. Burlingham, attended him and adviced his removal to a hospital, where he died early yesterday.
Mr. Metz was the son and partner of Joseph Metz, who died seven years ago. They had a contacting business and planing mill in Elm Street under the name of Joseph Metz & Son. The frim handled some big work. Valentine J. Metz supervised the erection of the Seventy-fourth armory, the Goodyear home in Delaware avenue, the North Presbyterian church at Utica and Linwood. Mr. Metz also had charge of building the Gould home in New York. The firm built a yacht and furniture for the walthy Gould family.
Mr. Metz, who was born in Buffalo, retired about three years ago, but spent much time at his place of business. He seemed to be in perfect health. He was a member of the Elks.
Surviving him, beside his son, is a daughter, Mrs. William B. Burlingham, from whose home at No. 656 Parkside avenue, the funeral will take place tomorrow morning at 9:30 o'clock. There will be services also at St. Margaret's church at 10 o'clock.
Mr. Metz's wife died Thanksgiving day, six years ago.
