Descendants of Joseph Burnett

Generation No. 1

1. JOSEPH2 BURNETT (BURNETT1)1,2,3,4,5 was born July 1854 in Alabama6,7, and died April 15, 1926 in Chilton County, Alabama8. He married (1) REBECCA F. MARTIN9,10,11 December 25, 1873 in Chilton County, Alabama12, daughter of WARREN MARTIN and HULDA GENTRY. She was born February 22, 1856 in Alabama13,14, and died April 21, 1904 in Chilton County, Alabama15. He married (2) ETTA ALEXANDER16,17 Abt. 190818. She was born March 29, 1879 in Alabama19, and died October 27, 1940 in Chilton County, Alabama19.

Notes for J
OSEPH BURNETT:
The earliest reference I can find to Joseph is in the 1860 census, where his is living in Montevallo WITHOUT ANY ADULTS, with his four brothers and one sister. They live two houses down from the Martins, and three houses from Lewis Burnett (aged 100!). Did their parents die and leave them alone? Did they go out of down (if so, why didn't the census taker put their names down)? I can find no relation between Lewis and these children, nor any likely Burnetts in the 1850 census. The two oldest boys (James and Henry) went to school, but the rest hadn't, and if their parents died early, this may explain why Joseph never learned to read and write.

In the 1880 census, Joseph and Rebecca live next door to James Burnett and his wife Loricered??, with children JP (son, 9), Dosaroza (dau 7), Wilmer (son 4), Im? (son 1). James is aged 32, while Joseph was 25. In the 1860 census, James was 11 and Joseph 6. This may or may not be the same James, but it seems likely.

Also in the 1880 census, page 12B (Chilton), a James Burnett aged 61 with wife Martha Trussell? perhaps this is a second wife) aged 50 lives NEXT DOOR to Warren and Hulda Martin. They live near Lewis Burnett, age 36, married to Malinda J. aged 36. James and Martha must be Joseph's parents, they are the same age as the Martins. But where were they in 1860 and 1870?

The Early Alabama Marriages book has James W. Burnett married to Martha C. Trussell on Oct. 27, 1870 in Tallapoosa Cty, Lewis Burnett to Martha Campbell on Oct 9, 1873 in Baker (Chilton) Cty, Louis to Jane Gentry (in 1860 our Burnetts lived next to Wm and Julia Gentry) March 7, 1867 in Shelby Cty, Henry Burnett to M. L. Hogan Jan 8, 1878 in Lawrence Cty, Jno. A. Burnett to Fannie L. Noah Oct 6, 1887 in Etowah Cty, and Ola Burnett married to Alfred C. Fitts August 20, 1905 in Etowah Cty. Alfred was buried in Etowah Cty but I cannot find Ola's grave. Did the kids more to Etowah County?

Joseph and Rebecca lived, in 1900, in Chilton county, in the census Precinct 9, marked in the census as "Strasburg". The census shows that Joseph could not read or write.

Joseph marries Etta around 1907. They are not listed in the Early Alabama Marriages book (possibly because they married after 1900). They claim in the 1910 census to have been married for two years, but their son Charlie is two years old. Possibly he was conceived before their married. In 1910, Joseph and Etta live in Shelby County, somewhere near Calera. In the 1920 census, Joseph and Etta live in Jefferson County.

What happened to Zola after Joseph married Etta? Lula, Evie, and Ola would have been 31, 27, and 19 and probably married or able to live alone, but Zola would have only been 14. Did she go to live with one of the sisters? Did Etta not want her? Did she die? See the reference above to an Ola marrying Alfred C. Fitts.

14 houses from Lewis Burnett (Sr.) and next to James Collins (age 31) (James and Martha also had a daughter named       Penelope) is this entry:

Martha "            20 F            Ala      note: her maiden name is probably Collins
Lewis "            5 M            Ala      note: this may be the one married to Martha Cambell 1873
John "            4 M            Ala      note: may have married Pollyann Pierce Nov 20 1870

Are these people related to our Joseph Burnett? Is this the same James as in 1860 with some age discrepancy? Is this the brother of our Joseph's father (since Joseph's father named one of their sons James)?

Notes for R
EBECCA F. MARTIN:
Her marriage record gives her middle initial as A., but her tombstone and that of her son Oscar give the initial F.

I assume her father is Warren Martin, the minister that married them, and they are buried close by. However, the census records all list his name as William, and there is no Warren in any census records in Alabama for the pertaining years. Either he lied to the census takers all those years, or his tombstone is wrong, or his name is William Warren.

Her gravestone is inscripted "She was the sunshine of our home, but gone to a bright home where grief cannot come."

The 1900 census shows she had 6 children, but only 5 living. However, the 1900 census doesn't show the female child born April 1880. Did she live? She must have, because Oscar had died in 1888 and that would be the dead child. Perhaps she was married by this time.

The 1900 census shows that Rebecca could read but not write.

Notes for E
TTA ALEXANDER:
Alexander may not be her last name. Living with her and Joseph in 1920 was Sallie Melvinie, listed as Joseph's sister in law. This could be Etta's sister or the wife of one of Joseph's brothers.
