Notes for WILLIAM POSEY: Earline Posey Gooch claims that George Washington and Sally Ann Posey were first cousins, that their fathers were brothers. I have not yet found census evidence for this, but am tying them as such. It may be that they are first cousins once removed, that William (George's father) is brother to Sally's grandfather Nathan instead of son. The age range is more appropriate. Charity would have been 13 when she had William for them to be first cousins proper. William lives in the Florence PO area in 1870. Look for William in Colbert County Lauderdale County in 1850, page 244B, William L. Posey, 33 M Shoemaker, GA. Wife Nancy, 27, SC. Children all born in Ala: Eliza Jane 9, Thomas 6, Martha 4, Sarah 2. 1860 Lauderdale County census, page 112: William Posey born ca 1816 on p. 112. He is 44, a farmer, and blind. They live in the "Westmooselaudville" area. he has daughters Eliza, 15, and Sarah, 11. But George W. should be 5 at this time, and there's no mention of Alex. HOWEVER, there is an Alex Posey, age 9, who lived with Stephen F. Johnson (p. 086), and this could be his son. A Martha Posey aged 13 lives with Samuel O. Johnson (p. 088). Both in Lauderdale County census 1850. The Martha would match the Martha in the 1850 pg 244 B. entry. Thomas must have died or gone to work somewhere else (he would be 16). Eliza should be listed as 19, but in this county I'm finding a large number of age changes from census to census. If Alex and Martha went to live elsewhere due to their mother's death and father's blindness, perhaps George did too. |
