I am researching the backgrounds of five family names:Burke, Tompkins, Mulligan, Riegelman, and Chamberlain. The branch of the Burke family I am researching began with James Burke born in the mid 1800's in St. Catherines, Ontario, Canada. He married a woman by the name of Elizabeth O'Meara and they eventually settled in the Belfast, NY area. The branch of the Tompkins family (some may have kept the Thompkins spelling) I am researching began with Thomas Tompkins who was born March 11, 1790.This branch of the familly had it's roots in the Westchester County area of NY or perhaps areas originally considered as part of CT.One of his sons, James Peter (b. 2/17/1841) married Harriet Jane Ganong. We have traced her ancestry back to Jean Guenon born about 1640 near LaRochelle, Saintonge, France. He married Margaret Sneden, from Holland. They had both sailed to North America in 1657 and settled in the Flushing, NY area, where they were married. She had a brother named Gilbert Gannung who married Naomi Williams in 1760.Her brother, David Williams was one of the three militiamen who captured Major Andre, in the Tarrytown, NY area, during the Revolution.George Mulligan from NY city married Fredericka Muller born in Frankfurt am Main, Germany.Their two daughters were Madeline Georgiana Mulligan Tompkins (b.3/12/1879), and Isabel Mulligan Eggers.Ernest Emil Riegelman (b. 11/8/1846) in Leipzig in Saxony, Germany. He married Marie Lamb (b. 4/17/1855) in NY city. They raised their family in the Yonkers, NY area.William Asbury Chamberlain (b. 1849) in NYC married Mary Louise Clockman (b. 11/14/1849) in NYC.Their family was also raised in the Yonkers, NY area.Any information would be appreciated and I am willing to share what information I have with others also. | |
