'Dutch fur traders plied the Hudson River one year after Hendrick [Henry] Hudson broached it in the "Half Moon" in 1609 to the shallows and bartered with the natives. Although Dutch sailing vessels returned to Holland in 1610 with a rich cargo of furs traded from the Indians in their newly discovered possessions, colonization was not immediately attempted. About 1613, a trading post with a fort, so called, and a few huts were established on the southerly end of Manhattan Island, and a similar post on Castle Island near Albany a little later. The Dutch West India Company of 1621 was purely commercial until 1629, when it inaugurated the feudalistic system of "Patroons" to establish colonies in "New Netherlands" to be of fifty persons to a tract sixteen miles long on a navigable stream. However, individuals could not gain title to the land until their contracts of service had been fulfilled.

Most of the families who came to Kinderhook [located just south of Albany] were freemen and would have none of the Patroon System. Thus, for more than 20 years the area was the head of free navigation on the Hudson and the territory nearest to Fort Orange [Albany] without domination of the Patroons. About 1638, New Netherlands was thrown open to free immigration and unrestricted trade. The Kinderhook District drew settlers of independent spirit and some means directly from Holland, and New Amsterdam, as well as freed colonists of the Patroons who were industrious and provident.

The Holland settlers loved the riverside and the banks of the Kinderhook and Claverack Creeks as building sites. The flowing waters were a sweet reminder of the Fatherland. By 1656, Kinderhook was one of the principal settlements on the river.'

Dear Otto:

I have found a lovely tidbit about your ancestor, Hendrick Conradsz Burchardt. On page 47 of volume 3 of the "Early Records of Albany" (the volume of notarial papers), there is a contract made by Arent van Curler, Willem Bout, and Reyer Cornelissen Soestbergen for the lease of a horse mill. One of the witnesses to this contract was your Hendrick, using a patronym and a toponym. He made his mark thus -- "H K V B". The notary -- D.V. Schelluyne -- wrote his name "Hendrick Coenraetsz van Bon". I believe that "Hendrick" himself would have written "Heinrich Konrad van Bonn". The year was 1660.

The immigrant Jan Frans Van Hoesen also was said to have been "van Hussem". He must have come from Husum in what was then Denmark but is now in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany.

It appears that Hendrick and Marya had at least 3 children:

Conrad Hendricks Burchardt m. Geesje Hendricks Van Wie/Verwey
Jan Hendricks Burchardt m. Katherine Hendrick Van Wie/Verwey
Isaac Hendrick Burchardt m. Judith Jans Hoes

I wonder if Judith was the daughter of Jan Tyszen Hoes' first wife--Breechje Maryns -- or of his second wife -- Styntje Jans Van Hoesen.

The name of your ancestor appears on page 406 in Evjen's book, 'Scandinavian Immigrants in New York

emigrants from Bonn.

Ellis, Franklin. 'Columbia County [NY] at the End of the Century,' Vol. I., Town of Kinderhook, p. 437, 1878

Emigrants of Holland and Sweden came to this immediate locality not much if any later than 1650. They brought with them money, building materials, cattle, and simple farming implements, with which the were soon able to make for themselves good homes upon fertile Kinderhook soil. The first names of
Freeholders that can definitely located here shows in 1687 the names Jan Hendrik DeBruyn, Peter Schuyler, Gerrit Teunissen, Laurence Van Alen, Isaac Vosburg, Andries Gardner, Hendrick Coonrad, Adam Dingman, Lambert Jansen, Frans Pieterson, Peter Volksburg Albert Gardenier, Jan Jacobson, — Gardenier.

[NOTE: Following Dutch naming customs, the name of the father of Hendrick Coonrad [BURCHARDT] would have been Coonrad BURCHARDT.]

Marilyn:

THANKS for your e-mail!

I am very much interested in the 'Hendrick Coonrad' mentioned in the book. He was probably my BURGHARDT ancestor who m. Marya Janse VAN HOESEN in the Claverack/Kinderhook, NY area.

Do you have a copy of the book? If so, is he mentioned further?

SOURCE: 1720 List of Freeholders of the City and County of Albany

The names of Coonrodt Burgaret and his brother, John Burgaret, of Kenderhook were included in this list.
Also listed in the 3rd Ward of Albany were: Cornelis Borghaert, Isaac Borghaert, Jacob Borgheart, and Jacob Borghaert Junr. The consistent spelling of the surname leads me to speculate that Cornelis and Isaac could have been brothers [or relatives] of Coonrodt and John. If so, all would have been sons of Hendrick Coenraetse BURGHARDT and Marya Janse VAN HOESEN.

SOURCE: Baptismal Records of the Zion Lutheran Church, Loonenburg [now Athens], Greene Co., NY

Johan Peter Borchard and his wife, Amalia [Mallie] baptized the several children included in the attachment at the Zion Lutheran Church of Loonenburg [now Athens], Greene Co., NY, .

Note that the the various spellings of the surname are similar to those variations previously associated with our Burghardt family and its many branches.

When those surnames and dates of baptism are considered, I believe that there is a good possibility that Johan Peter Borchard could have been another son [or at least a relative] of Hendricd Coenraatse Burghardt and Marya Janse Van Hoesen.

Another factor is that the Zion Lutheran Church is located just across the Hudson River to the west from Hudson [Claverack Landing] not far from Kinderhook.

SOURCE: Taylor, Charles J. 'History of Great Barrington [Berkshire] Massachusetts 1676-1882,' Town of Great Barrington, 1928.

Numerous mention of Coenraat Hendrickse Burghardt is made in this publication. He acted on behalf of the settling committee of Housatonic Colony [now the area around Great Barrington, Berkshire Co., MA] to buy the land from the Indians in or before 1724. He became a prominent landholder in the Upper Township of Sheffield [now Great Barrington] and raised a large family.

Note below that Coenraat's younger brother, John 'De Bruer--also of Kinderhook, was a prominent landholder in the Upper Township.

'Of the first settlers of Great Barrington, a majority were English, several of them from Westfield and that vicinity, a few more Dutch from the state of New York. We are unable to determine the towns from which some the families removed to this place. The earliest settlers of the town, south of the bridge, were Coonrod Burghardt; Samuel Dewey; Samuel Dewey, Jun'r; Asahel Dewey; Thomas Dewey; John Granger; Samuel Harmon; Moses Ingersoll; David King; Stephen King; Moses King; Israel Lawton; Joseph Noble; Thomas Pier; John Phelps; Joshua Root, Joseph Sheldon; Samuel Suydam; Lawrence Suydham; Joshua White; Samuel Younglove; Samuel Younglove, Jr. Most of these settled here from 1726-1730; it is probable that none of them came later than 1733. Above the bridge, the forty proprietary rights in the Upper Township were, in 1742, owned by sixteen individuals, several of whom were non-residents.

The early settlers in that part of the town were: Derrick Hogaboom; Hezekiah and Josiah Phelps; Joseph Pixley and his sons, Jonah, Joseph, Moses, John, and Jonathan; John Williams; Isaac Van Deusen; Jehoiakim Van Valkenburgh, John Burghardt, alias De Bruer; and Hendrick Burghardt. A little later came William King; Thomas Horton; Daniel Nash and his son, Jonathan; Jonathan Willard; and David Ingersoll. These last named appear all to have resided here as early as 1740.

To these settlers, or to the owners of proprietary rights; house lots, with meadow and upland, were laid out by the settling committee along the valley of the river from the north line of Sheffield to the foot of Monument Mountain; and a few locations were made west of the Green River, in the southerly and westerly parts of the town. But with these few exceptions, the settlements were for the most part confined to the valley, and did not penetrate the more remoted parts of the town until 1753, or later.'

Both Coonrod Burghardt and his younger brother, John 'De Bruer' Burghardt were proprietors of land rights when the Upper Township [1722-1742] was finally laid out [see p. 26]. Coonrod had 6 rights [2,400 acres]; and John had 4 rights [1,600 acres].

'John Burghardt [alias John De Bruer], said to have been called De Bruer by reason of his having been formerly engaged in brewing, and perhaps also to distinguish him from others of the same name, was originally from Kinderhook. He had settled, at an early date, above the mountain, in Stockbridge, but when that township was set apart for the Indians, he exchanged his possessions for four rights below the mountain and removed thither about 1736-1737. He settled where Deacon George Beckwith for a long time, and more recently Thomas H. Curtis, resided, on the road to Stockbridge. Here he had a home lot of two hundred acres and large tracts of meadow land along the river.

Mr. Burghardt was deceased before 1770, and his son, John, commonly known by this military title of 'Ensign,' built the Beckwith house, it is believed in 1773. Ensign John Burghardt was a man of character and influence, often serving the town in public offices and committees. He married, before the Revolution, Eleanor, daughter of Israel Dewey. His children were Andrew, who is said to have occupied the old Levi Hyde place; Hugo, a distinguished physician of Richmond; Catherine; and Lambert, who removed to Kinderhook, and who was the grandfather of the late Garrett Burghardt, Esq., of Van Deusenville. Ensign John Burghardt, perhaps seventy years ago, removed to Richmond and spent the latter years of his life with his son, Doctor Hugo Burghardt.'

Trying (and so far having no luck) to trace the ancestors of JUDITH / JUDICK JANS who married ISAAC HENDRICKS (Van AMBURGH) c. 1697. They had the following children:

1- ALIDA bapt. Sept. 4 1698, Albany, wit. JAN GOES, CLAAS LUCASZ and SARAH GERRITSZ
2- CHRISTIANA bapt. Kingston 1701, wit. Teunis Tappan, Marytje Bos
3-JAN bapt. Kingston Oct. 6, 1703, wit. Iede Teunisse, Annatie Iedeson
4- (possibly) Jacob, said to have been born 1708

Does anyone know who the parents of my mysterious Judith Jansdr. Hoes were? I've found a Jan Hoes who had a dau. named Judith, but every web site I can find lists her as marrying someone else. . .! HELP!!

Many thanks,

Tys, John and Dirck Goes, and his daughters Teuntie, Anna, Judith, and Maryhe Goes. His eldest son Tys shall have a cow and 40 shillings for his birth right, and he shall also have the small creek, as it belongs to the testator, with his partners Peter Schuyler, and Sybrant Van Schaick. His son Jan Goes, shall have the great piece of land and woodland, and he is to build for his mother a small house and
barn to winter as many cows as she has need for, and for a negro to wait on her. And his mother is to have the fourth sheaf of the grain, and the chamber to livein. His son Dirck shall have the land that lies backward, and the place where he now lives, and Jan and Dirck shall have together the great piece of meadow. This is to be appraised at less than its value, because the land spoils by the overflowing of the creek. And after their mother's death they shall pay in proportion to each of the children. His granddaughter Mayhe is to have a cow.

Witnesses, Dirck Vanderlaer, Tobias Van Vlecq, Peter Van Bergen.
Proved in New York, November 2, 1708.

Trying (and so far having no luck) to trace the ancestors of JUDITH / JUDICK JANS who married ISAAC HENDRICKS (Van AMBURGH) c. 1697. They had the following children:

1- ALIDA bapt. Sept. 4 1698, Albany, wit. JAN GOES, CLAAS LUCASZ and SARAH GERRITSZ
2- CHRISTIANA bapt. Kingston 1701, wit. Teunis Tappan, Marytje Bos
3-JAN bapt. Kingston Oct. 6, 1703, wit. Iede Teunisse, Annatie Iedeson
4- (possibly) Jacob, said to have been born 1708

Does anyone know who the parents of my mysterious Judith Jansdr. Hoes were? I've found a Jan Hoes who had a dau. named Judith, but every web site I can find lists her as marrying someone else. . .! HELP!!

Many thanks,
Jim Miller (jpmiller@rochester.rr.com)
